View ChartReserve Dollar (RSV) is a dollar-pegged stablecoin built on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token. It is the flagship stablecoin of the Reserve project, which aims to build a stable, decentralized, asset-backed cryptocurrency and digital payment system that scales supply with demand while maintaining 100% or more collateral backing. RSV is fully backed by a basket of collateral assets, specifically TUSD, PAX, and USDC, ensuring its stability and reliability. The total supply of RSV stands at approximately 28.85 million tokens, which represents 100% of the circulating supply. The project launched its initial RSV token on October 6, 2019, and has since undergone significant development, including the retirement of RSV v1 and the introduction of RSV v2 in October 2019, as well as a contract upgrade in July 2020 to support meta-transactions for gasless payments.
Reserve was co-founded by Nevin Freeman, who serves as CEO, and Matt Elder, who serves as CTO. The project has attracted investment from prominent figures, including Peter Thiel, founder of PayPal and Palantir, and Sam Altman. The Reserve Protocol team has grown significantly since its inception, comprising over two dozen members, including developers, engineers, and legal and compliance specialists. ABC Labs contributes to the protocol. The project's advisory and investment backing from high-profile technology figures underscores its ambition to create a decentralized, asset-backed stablecoin ecosystem.
RSV operates through a mechanism managed by the Reserve Manager, which manipulates the supply of RSV to keep its price stable at $1. When the market price of RSV falls below $1, the Reserve Manager buys RSV at the market price using vault assets and burns them, reducing supply to drive the price back to the peg. These trades are executed through an auction system with specified maximum prices and quantities to ensure efficient market operations. The Reserve system interacts with three kinds of tokens: the Reserve token (RSV), the Reserve Rights token (RSR), and a growing variety of tokenized real-world assets held by the Reserve smart contract to back RSV. RSV is a dollar-pegged asset backed by TUSD, PAX, and USDC, and is fully backed by a basket of collateral assets.
Reserve Dollar distinguishes itself through its asset-backed design and its mission to create a universal store of value, particularly in regions with unreliable banking infrastructure and hyperinflation. Unlike centralized stablecoin issuers that can freeze assets, Reserve advocates for decentralized stablecoins that are community-owned. The project's three-token system, comprising RSV, RSR, and tokenized real-world assets, creates a self-reinforcing ecosystem. The Reserve Protocol allows anyone to create decentralized stablecoins independent of fiat monetary systems, with the goal of addressing the effects of hyperinflation. The platform's RToken factory design enables the creation of stablecoins collateralized by baskets of tokenized assets, similar to ETFs, with one-to-one relationships between tokens and their backing baskets. Revenue generation for RTokens can occur through lending collateral tokens, revenue sharing with collateral token issuers, and transaction fees.
RSV serves multiple purposes within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. It provides a stable currency for transactions, protecting users from the volatility associated with other cryptocurrencies. For individuals in high-inflation regions, RSV enables savings protection by allowing conversion of volatile local currencies into a stable digital asset. Within the decentralized finance ecosystem, RSV serves as a stable asset facilitating lending, borrowing, and trading activities. The Reserve app has gained significant usage in some hyperinflationary economies, demonstrating the practical utility of RSV as a tool for financial stability. Additionally, RSV supports meta-transactions, allowing users to make on-chain payments without requiring Ether for gas fees, improving user experience through gasless transactions via relayers.
The Reserve ecosystem is expanding through the development of the full Reserve Protocol on Ethereum mainnet, which was planned for launch in 2022. The platform allows anyone to create their own stablecoin, called an RToken, through factory smart contracts similar to Uniswap. Upon initial launch, two types of stablecoins were planned in addition to RSV: one purely backed by USD fiat coins with no insurance or revenue, and another backed by DeFi USD tokens that generate yield for RSR stakers. The company is preparing for a self-custody version of their app by forking the RSV contract and adding meta transaction support and a Reserve Relayer. As more real-life assets are tokenized, they may serve to collateralize and back such stablecoins in the future, with baskets potentially holding real assets or even traditional equities. The project's code repository is available at https://github.com/reserve-protocol/rsd, and the protocol has undergone an audit by CertiK.
RSV is not mined through traditional proof-of-work mechanisms. Instead, it operates as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain with a supply adjustment mechanism managed by the Reserve Manager. The Reserve Manager manipulates the supply to keep the price stable at $1, buying and burning tokens when necessary through an auction system. RSV tokens are mintable and burnable. For those interested in participating in the Reserve ecosystem, RSR (Reserve Rights) serves as the native staking token of Reserve Protocol. RSR can be staked on specific RTokens, where stakers receive a portion of the RToken collateral's revenue in exchange for being the first capital-at-risk in the case of collateral default. RSR holders also have governance rights, including the ability to propose and vote on changes to the protocol's configuration.
To keep your RSV tokens safe, use self-custody wallets that support ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. Hardware wallets provide an additional layer of security by storing private keys offline. Always verify contract addresses before interacting with any token, and ensure you are using the correct RSV contract address. Be aware of the risks associated with centralized stablecoin issuers who have the power to freeze assets, as this poses counterparty risk. Understand the collateral default risk: if one or more collateral tokens were to default, the basket would be rebalanced by leveraging other collateral tokens while utilizing staked RSR, and if the total amount of staked RSR is not sufficient to make up for the default, stablecoin holders would ultimately take the corresponding loss. Additionally, be mindful of issuance queue risk, as high demand for RTokens may result in significant wait times before tokens are released due to global rate limits per block. Regularly monitor official Reserve channels for updates and security best practices.
