View ChartLido Staked ETH (STETH) is a liquid staking token issued by the Lido protocol that lets ETH holders stake while keeping a transferable token. It represents a user's stake in the Lido protocol, enabling participation in Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus while remaining liquid.

Lido launched on 2020-12-23 and was co-founded by Konstantin Lomashuk (founder of P2P Validator), Vasiliy Shapovalov (CTO) and Jordan Fish. Governance of the protocol, including upgrades and treasury management, is managed by LDO token holders through the Lido DAO. This keeps the protocol community-owned and operated without a centralized authority controlling user funds.
STETH functions through a straightforward yet powerful mechanism. Users deposit their ETH into the Lido smart contract. The protocol pools this ETH and stakes it with a curated set of professional node operators who run Ethereum validators. In return, users receive STETH tokens at a 1:1 ratio to their deposited ETH. STETH is a rebasing token: its balance rebases daily to reflect accrued staking rewards, and can also decrease if validators incur slashing penalties. This process happens on-chain, eliminating the need for manual claims. The key innovation is liquidity: while the underlying ETH is locked in the Beacon Chain for staking, the STETH tokens remain freely transferable and usable.
Lido charges a 10% fee on staking rewards, split between node operators and the Lido DAO Treasury; users receive the remaining 90% of network staking rewards.
Lido issues two tokenized forms of the same staked ETH: stETH, which rebases daily, and wstETH, a non-rebasing wrapped version whose balance stays fixed while its underlying value grows.
STETH's primary value proposition is addressing the liquidity problem inherent in traditional Ethereum staking. Solo staking requires a 32 ETH minimum and locks the staked ETH in the Beacon Chain, so the position cannot be used elsewhere while staked. stETH addresses this by issuing a transferable token that represents the staked ETH plus accrued rewards.
Risks remain: the Lido contracts could contain an undiscovered vulnerability; validators can be slashed, putting staked funds at risk; stETH can trade below its underlying ETH value due to withdrawal constraints; and staking APR figures are estimates, not guarantees.
STETH serves multiple critical functions within the crypto economy, primarily revolving around capital efficiency.
To exit, users submit a withdrawal request and then claim in the Lido app to receive ETH at a 1:1 ratio, or swap stETH on DEX integrations.
Development focuses on multi-chain expansion, governance refinement, and risk mitigation.
STETH is not mined. It is minted exclusively through the Lido protocol's staking process. There is no proof-of-work or proof-of-stake mining for STETH itself. The only way to "create" new STETH is to deposit ETH into the official Lido staking portal or a supported integrated application. The token generation is a direct result of a user's stake in the Ethereum network via Lido's pooled validator infrastructure. The staking rewards that increase the STETH supply are generated by the underlying Ethereum validators operated by Lido's node operators.
Securing STETH involves standard Ethereum wallet security practices, with extra attention to its rebasing nature.
STETH is available on major centralized and decentralized exchanges, as well as directly through the official Lido staking app (stake.lido.fi). To acquire STETH, deposit ETH into the Lido staking portal to mint stETH at a 1:1 ratio, or purchase stETH on a reputable exchange and store it in a non-custodial wallet you control.
