View ChartRen (REN) is a decentralized cross-chain liquidity protocol that enables the permissionless and private transfer of value between different blockchain networks. It acts as a key infrastructure layer for cross-chain liquidity, allowing users to move digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum between different blockchains in a trustless and decentralized manner. The protocol is designed to solve the problem of liquidity fragmentation across the growing number of blockchain networks.
Ren is an open protocol that facilitates the movement of digital assets across different blockchains without relying on a centralized intermediary. The Ren protocol uses a network of nodes called Darknodes, which are secured by REN tokens, to maintain its cross-chain functionality. REN is the native utility token of the Ren ecosystem, used for staking, governance, and paying fees within the network. The project was originally built on Ethereum but has since expanded its focus to support multiple blockchain ecosystems. Ren aims to solve the liquidity fragmentation problem in DeFi by allowing assets from one chain to be used on another.

Ren was founded in 2017 by Taiyang Zhang (CEO) and Loong Wang (co-founder). The project was founded in 2017 as Republic Protocol and first announced in January 2018, with the goal of creating a decentralized dark pool for trading large amounts of cryptocurrency without revealing order details. The team later rebranded the project to Ren in 2019, shifting its focus to a broader cross-chain liquidity protocol. The project's website is published by the Ren Foundation (© 2026 Ren Foundation). In December 2022, Ren began winding up its 1.0 protocol after its operating company became involved in FTX bankruptcy proceedings, and minting was disabled. The Ren network is currently operational but is expected to go offline in the near future, according to the project's X account.
Ren operates through a network of nodes called Darknodes, which are responsible for managing the cross-chain transfer of assets. To become a Darknode, a user must stake a significant amount of REN tokens (100,000 REN) as collateral, per the project's documentation. This staking mechanism ensures that Darknodes act honestly, as they can be penalized (slashed) for any malicious behavior. When a user wants to move an asset, like Bitcoin, to the Ethereum network, they send their BTC to a Ren-controlled address. The Darknodes then verify the transaction and mint an equivalent amount of RenBTC, an ERC-20 token pegged 1:1 to Bitcoin, on the Ethereum blockchain. Cross-chain transfers are managed by Darknodes using sMPC, so no single Darknode holds the private keys; however, the protocol's operation has depended on the project team, which disabled minting during the 2022 wind-down. The reverse process, burning RenBTC to redeem BTC, works in the same way. The protocol uses a secure multiparty computation (sMPC) scheme to generate and manage the private keys for the addresses that hold the underlying assets, ensuring that no single Darknode has access to the funds.
Ren's primary value proposition lies in its ability to provide a truly decentralized and permissionless cross-chain bridge. Unlike many other bridging solutions that rely on a centralized custodian or a multisig wallet controlled by a small group of entities, Ren's use of Darknodes and sMPC ensures that no single party can censor transactions or steal funds. Like any bridge, Ren carries smart-contract and operational risk; in December 2022 the project began winding up its 1.0 protocol and warned that crypto could be lost, and the network is expected to go offline in the near future. Another key differentiator is Ren's focus on privacy. Ren uses zkSnarks and Shamir Secret Sharing to fragment orders and hide order information from individual Darknodes; transfers on the destination chain remain publicly visible on that chain. This is a significant advantage for users who value financial privacy. As of the latest project statements, the Ren network is operational but expected to go offline in the near future; the 1.0 protocol is being wound up. Historically, Ren supported assets and blockchains including Bitcoin Cash, Zcash, and others, making it a versatile tool for DeFi users.
The REN token serves several key functions within the Ren ecosystem. Its primary use is for staking to run a Darknode. By staking REN, users earn a portion of the fees generated by the protocol, providing a financial incentive to maintain the network's security and uptime. REN is also used for governance, allowing token holders to vote on proposals that affect the protocol's future, such as fee adjustments, asset additions, and technical upgrades. Users are not required to hold REN to use the platform; fees are paid in the cryptocurrency of the chain on which the activity occurs, and Darknode operators earn rewards from network fees in REN. This fee mechanism helps to align the incentives of all participants in the ecosystem. Beyond these core functions, REN can also be traded on various cryptocurrency exchanges, providing liquidity for traders and investors.
REN is listed on a number of cryptocurrency exchanges; check that a platform is available and regulated in your jurisdiction before trading.
