About Pickle Finance

What is Pickle Finance (PICKLE)?

Pickle Finance is a DeFi yield aggregator built on the Ethereum platform that automatically compounds rewards for liquidity providers across multiple chains. Its core promise is captured by its own tagline: "The set and forget yield maximizer." Instead of manually harvesting and restaking farming rewards every day, users deposit assets into Pickle's vaults and let the protocol handle the compounding, saving both time and gas fees.

The project launched on September 12, 2020, and operates primarily through two product types: Jars, which compound returns from other protocols and issue a pToken in return, and Farms, which distribute additional PICKLE rewards for staking a Jar's pToken. PICKLE is an ERC-20 token with no maximum supply; new tokens are minted each Ethereum block at a current rate of 0.05 PICKLE per block under a rapidly decreasing emission schedule. The project never premined tokens, held no ICO, and stated it received no venture capital investment.

Pickle Finance announced on June 11, 2025 that it was sunsetting after five years of operation, describing the decision as "the most responsible path forward" and confirming that the project treasury would be distributed back to the community.

Who created Pickle Finance?

Pickle Finance was founded by four pseudonymous developers. The best-known among them is "Larry the Cucumber," a reference to a character from the religious cartoon Veggie Tales. Larry has remained with the protocol through its various phases, developing new strategies and expanding its reach. Before crypto, he worked in web development and Android mobile app development; he was first introduced to Ethereum in 2015 by his friend BigBrainBriner and later began experimenting with Solidity-based projects. He credits the success of the Maker Protocol with showing him the potential of decentralized finance.

The other three original developers were "Rick," who left the project early on, and "0xPenguin" and "BigBrainBriner," who both stepped away in December 2020. Today the core team consists of many members dedicated to furthering Pickle Finance as a leading DeFi protocol. Additional background is available in an interview titled "Interview With Pickle Finance's Larry The Cucumber."

How does Pickle Finance work?

Pickle Finance functions as an automated yield farming layer on top of other DeFi protocols. Users deposit assets into Jars, which are strategy vaults that compound returns generated elsewhere. In exchange, depositors receive a pToken representing their share of the Jar. Because compounding happens automatically on a frequent basis, users capture the effect of compound interest without having to claim and restake rewards manually, and they pay far less in cumulative gas fees.

Farms sit one level above Jars. By staking a Jar's pToken in a Farm, users earn additional PICKLE rewards on top of the underlying yield, giving their returns an extra boost. PICKLE itself is minted each Ethereum block under a decreasing emission schedule, and holders can lock it to receive DILL, the governance token of the protocol.

In May 2023, Pickle integrated Chainlink Automation to make its Jars "smarter & safer than ever," using it to manage Uniswap v3 positions more smoothly. Chainlink Automation went live on Optimism on May 15, 2023. The protocol's strategies were audited by MixBites, and the complete protocol was audited by Haechi Audit, which found no major security vulnerabilities at the time.

What makes Pickle Finance unique and valuable?

Pickle Finance's primary differentiator is automation. Manual yield farming is labor-intensive and expensive: each harvest-and-restake cycle costs gas, and the compounding effect is lost when users cannot act frequently enough. Pickle removes that burden entirely, positioning itself as a "set and forget" tool for liquidity providers who want maximum compounding without daily management.

A second distinguishing feature is its governance and revenue-sharing model. DILL holders share in 45% of protocol revenues, can boost PICKLE rewards on their farms, and hold governance power over the protocol. As of February 2023, the official site reported 1,050 DILL holders, 61.6% of PICKLE supply locked (1,921,791 tokens), and an average lock duration of 3.34 years, indicating a committed long-term holder base.

The project also built a multi-chain presence across Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Optimism, and pursued integrations with Chainlink and Arbitrum ecosystem initiatives. Its stated security posture emphasizes "battle-hardened and audited foundations," with user fund safety prioritized over speed.

What is Pickle Finance used for?

PICKLE serves several functions within the protocol. It is the reward token distributed through Farms, incentivizing users to stake their Jar pTokens and deepen liquidity. It is also the token users lock to obtain DILL, which grants governance rights and a share of protocol revenue.

Beyond the token itself, the protocol's Jars and Farms are the practical tools users interact with. Jars let depositors earn compounded yield on assets they already hold in other DeFi protocols, while Farms let them layer additional PICKLE incentives on top. Governance participants use DILL to create and vote on proposals that change how the protocol operates. The protocol also introduced a Smart Treasury concept announced in December 2020, designed to automatically buy back PICKLE with fee revenue, act as a liquidity provider, and issue PICKLE for purposes such as grants.

How Is the Pickle Finance ecosystem developing?

Pickle Finance expanded across multiple chains and formed integrations with major infrastructure providers. It is tagged within both the Arbitrum and Optimism ecosystems, and in March 2023 it asked the Arbitrum community to support its inclusion in the Arbitrum DAO ecosystem through a forum proposal. In September 2023, it posted a draft proposal under Arbitrum's STIP Round 1 seeking deeper ties with that ecosystem. Its partnership roster includes Chainlink, Arbitrum, and Optimism.

Development activity is visible through its GitHub organization, which hosts 20 repositories, and its Medium publication, where the team provides quarterly business reviews to the DILL DAO covering team changes and protocol updates. Community channels include a Discord with 3,837 members, an X account with 23.1K followers, a Medium blog, and a forum referenced in the official site footer. The official site supports English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Hindi, Dutch, and Turkish.

The ecosystem's development arc concluded with the June 11, 2025 sunset announcement, in which the project stated it was distributing its treasury back to the community.

How to mine Pickle Finance?

PICKLE cannot be mined in the traditional proof-of-work sense. New tokens are minted programmatically on the Ethereum blockchain according to the emission schedule of 0.05 PICKLE per block, which decreases rapidly over time. There is no mining hardware or computational competition involved in obtaining PICKLE.

Instead, users acquire PICKLE by participating in the protocol's farming mechanisms. The standard path is to deposit assets into a Jar to receive a pToken, then stake that pToken in a corresponding Farm to earn PICKLE rewards. Yields vary by pool and market conditions; the official site has advertised maximum yields of up to 553% APY through Pickle Farms. Users who want governance influence and a share of protocol revenue can go a step further and lock their PICKLE to receive DILL, which also boosts the PICKLE rewards on their farms.

How to keep your PICKLE Coin safe?

PICKLE is an ERC-20 token, so standard Ethereum security practices apply. Store tokens in a reputable self-custody wallet where you control the private keys, and never share your seed phrase or private key with anyone. Hardware wallets offer stronger protection for significant holdings by keeping keys offline. Always verify contract addresses before interacting with any token or protocol, and be cautious of phishing sites that imitate official project domains.

Because Pickle Finance operates as a DeFi protocol, smart contract risk is a relevant consideration. The project's strategies were audited by MixBites and the full protocol by Haechi Audit, and Pickle has stated that user fund safety is prioritized over speed. Even so, audits are not a guarantee of safety: in November 2020, Pickle Finance was hacked and nearly 20 million DAI was stolen, an incident documented in a REKT article dated November 22, 2020. A war room was formed between members of Stake Capital and Yearn in response.

Given that the project announced its sunset in June 2025 and is distributing its treasury back to the community, holders should stay informed through official channels such as the project's X account, Discord, and Medium blog, and treat any unexpected request for funds or keys as a likely scam.
