View ChartKomodo (KMD) is an open-source technology provider that offers all-in-one blockchain solutions for developers and enterprises. The project builds technologies that enable anyone to launch branded decentralized exchanges, cross-protocol financial applications, and independent blockchains. At its core, Komodo is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency with regular mining, enhanced by its Delayed Proof of Work (dPoW) security system that recycles Bitcoin's hashrate to ensure immutability. KMD serves as the community currency for the Komodo ecosystem, used for scalable, fast, cheap, and secure transactions. The token has a total supply of approximately 141.26M KMD and a circulating supply of about 135.95M KMD; the issuer does not publish a separate maximum supply figure. The project positions itself as a "REAL WEB3 EMPOWERMENT" platform, inviting users to join the trustless experience by eliminating the middleman and taking real control of what they own.
Circulating supply of 135,953,876 KMD represents about 96% of the total supply of 141,262,234 KMD, leaving a small share still to be released. KMD is natively mined on the Komodo chain and is also issued as a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain at contract address 0x2003f7ba57Ea956B05B85C60B4B2Ceea9b111256. For KMD trading pairs, 25% of DEX transaction fees is used to automatically burn KMD, permanently removing those tokens from supply.
The driving force behind Komodo is James "JL777" Lee, described as a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency space and a gifted C programmer with a long history of innovation in the blockchain space. Lee, along with the Komodo team, played a pivotal role in the project's development. The Komodo Platform was forked from Zcash by the SuperNET team, and it is the evolution of the BitcoinDark cryptocurrency. Komodo team members initially chose not to reveal their identity, with the founder and one core developer going by the moniker JL777. Team information tracked by CryptoRank lists nearly 30 members across leadership, development and marketing; many early team members chose to remain pseudonymous. The Komodo team consists of a select group of developers and experts in blockchain and cybersecurity, led by the developer known as jl777.
Komodo's form of providing security is called Delayed Proof of Work technology (dPoW). It builds on the most advanced form of blockchain security and is described as the industry-leading 51% attack security network. dPoW notarizes Komodo blocks onto the Bitcoin blockchain through 64 community-voted notary nodes; the notarization chain also uses Litecoin cross-notarizations as an intermediate layer. The network currently secures over 30 production blockchains. Because an attacker would also need to change the Bitcoin blockchain to tamper with Komodo, almost any attack attempt is mitigated. The block data from Komodo is introduced in Bitcoin via custom transactions made by the notary nodes that are connected to both blockchains. Any discrepancy on either blockchain will be detected by these nodes. This consensus mechanism can be used by basically any cryptocurrency that wishes to better its security system. Through Komodo itself, other blockchains can plug into Bitcoin, saving costs on transaction fees.
Komodo provides its own native multi-chain blockchain network that enables anyone to launch an independent blockchain called a Komodo Smart Chain (KSC), which runs separately from the KMD chain. Each KSC gets its own coin with zero gas fees and fully customizable parameters. Komodo also offers Komodo Custom Contracts (CCs) — a library of UTXO-based smart contracts for creating advanced dApps on KSCs. According to the Komodo team, Komodo has been building P2P atomic swap technology since 2014 and released one of the earlier production-ready atomic swap DEX implementations. Komodo's atomic swap work dates back to 2016, before its mainnet launch on 2017-02-05; the project says it was among the early implementers of Tier Nolan's atomic swap concept. Composability is a design principle focused on providing a wide array of components, which can be activated as needed and used in different configurations to meet the unique demands of a specific use case. Developers use the open-source Komodo DeFi Framework to build cross-protocol DEXs, multi-coin non-custodial wallets, initial DEX offering (IDO) portals, and other decentralized applications.
KMD is the community currency for the Komodo ecosystem and is used for scalable, fast, cheap, and secure transactions. KMD is used to pay network transaction fees, which the project describes as low-cost, with confirmation typically within seconds. KMD is one of the most actively traded pairs within Komodo Wallet. There is a 10% trading fee discount for taker orders when selling KMD for another cryptocurrency within Komodo Wallet. For KMD trading pairs, 25% of the DEX transaction fees goes towards automatically burning KMD. KMD held in T-addresses accrues a 5% annual reward, funded by the network's emission schedule; this reward dilutes existing holders and stops once the emission cap is reached. Only T-address balances qualify, and the rate is not a guaranteed return. Users are also able to generate KMD through the process of mining.
The project's flagship end-user application is Komodo Wallet (formerly AtomicDEX) — a non-custodial multi-coin wallet, crypto bridge, and DEX rolled into one app. Komodo markets its wallet as compatible with 99% of crypto assets, per the project's own description. Komodo Wallet is the third-generation application of Komodo's atomic swap technology. Komodo Wallet is permissionless, non-custodial and decentralized and thus doesn't require any user-side KYC. It is supported on Web, Mobile, Desktop, Browser Extension and CLI. Komodo Wallet supports a broad set of token standards, including ERC-20, BEP-20, AVX-20, QRC-20 and KRC-20, which lets users hold and swap assets from several ecosystems in one non-custodial app. MoonFi bridges Cosmos/IBC to native BTC, ETH, DOGE, MATIC and more, offering the widest protocol support. According to a December 5, 2025 press release, Gleec acquired the Komodo ecosystem. Separately, Binance announced in June 2025 that it would delist KMD on July 4, 2025. On 20 December 2025, Komodo released v0.9.2 [Draco Typhon], a mandatory daemon update.
Komodo is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency with regular mining, meaning users are able to generate KMD through the process of mining. The network utilizes the Equihash algorithm alongside its hybrid dPoW and PoW consensus mechanism. Miners participate in securing the network while earning KMD rewards. In addition to mining, KMD held in T-addresses accrues a 5% annual reward, funded by the network's emission schedule; this reward dilutes existing holders and stops once the emission cap is reached. Only T-address balances qualify, and the rate is not a guaranteed return. Through Komodo's dPoW system, the network recycles Bitcoin's hashrate to ensure immutability, adding an extra layer of security to the mining process. The Delayed Proof of Work system notarizes Komodo blocks on the Bitcoin blockchain via 64 community-voted notary nodes.
The safest way to store KMD is through non-custodial wallets where you control your private keys. Komodo Wallet is a fully non-custodial multi-coin wallet, crypto bridge, and DEX where seed phrases, private keys, and all other sensitive data generated by the wallet are managed on the user's own device and never leave it. The DEX is fully decentralized with no middleman, allowing users to trade P2P using atomic swaps while always maintaining 100% control of their funds. Guarda Wallet offers a secure and user-friendly platform for managing cryptocurrencies in a non-custodial manner, available on Web, Desktop, Mobile, and Browser Extension, with staking support for KMD. Ledger hardware wallets also support Komodo via the Komodo app, providing cold storage options. Always write down your seed phrase and store it securely, as it is the only recovery option. Never share your private keys with anyone, and consider using hardware wallets for large holdings.
KMD, like other crypto assets, is subject to price volatility, and its value can fall as well as rise. Regulatory treatment of crypto assets varies by jurisdiction and may change. Blockchain software carries technical risk, including bugs, network disruptions and security vulnerabilities. The points above describe how the project presents its technology and should not be read as a guarantee of performance or safety.
