View ChartETHGas (GWEI) is a Realtime Ethereum Infrastructure protocol designed to accelerate Ethereum transaction speeds by more than 100x through a mechanism called blockspace commoditization. The project introduces a blockspace market that allows Ethereum gas and block inclusion rights to be traded ahead of time, rather than exclusively through spot auctions at the moment of block production. By decomposing blocks into smaller units and enabling validators to sell future blockspace through forward and futures-style markets, ETHGas aims to replace ad hoc bidding with more predictable execution and lower latency confirmations.
The protocol supports pre-confirmations, which give transactions execution guarantees before final block inclusion, and offers gas abstraction through its Open Gas Initiative, allowing applications and protocols to sponsor gas fees on behalf of users. ETHGas operates as infrastructure that integrates with existing Ethereum validator software and does not replace Ethereum consensus.
GWEI is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum Mainnet, also deployed on BNB Smart Chain as a BEP20 token. It has a total and maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) tokens. The token generation event took place on January 21, 2026. ETHGas launched on Ethereum mainnet in 2025, completed a $12 million seed round in late 2025, and has since rolled out its governance token and community airdrop. As of late 2025, ETHGas routes a low single-digit percentage of Ethereum blockspace through its pipeline, with participation from multiple validator operators and infrastructure providers.
ETHGas was founded by Kevin Lepsoe, who serves as Founder and CEO. Lepsoe is a former financial engineering lead at Morgan Stanley, bringing a background in structured products and market infrastructure to the project. The team is primarily based in Hong Kong.
In late 2025, ETHGas completed a $12 million seed round led by Polychain Capital, with participation from Amber Group, BlueYard, and Tokka Labs. Detailed public information about the broader core team and advisory board is currently limited.
ETHGas addresses a core inefficiency in Ethereum's base layer, which operates with approximately 12-second block times and sells blockspace on demand. The existing mempool model forces users and applications to bid blindly for inclusion, creating fee spikes, failed transactions, and uncertainty during periods of congestion. ETHGas transforms blockspace into a structured, tradable asset by using commitments, pre-confirmations, and real-time settlement guarantees.
The protocol supplements the existing model by decomposing blocks into smaller units and enabling validators to sell future blockspace through forward and futures-style markets. Participants such as validators, block builders, and searchers can buy, sell, or trade these blockspace units in advance, enabling more predictable execution and lower latency confirmations. Pre-confirmations allow transactions to receive execution guarantees before final block inclusion, reducing effective settlement times for applications that require faster feedback than standard block confirmation intervals.
In addition to blockspace markets, ETHGas supports gas abstraction through its Open Gas Initiative. This initiative enables applications and protocols to sponsor gas fees on behalf of users, allowing end users to interact with Ethereum without directly managing variable gas costs. Gas costs are handled at the protocol or application level, with settlement occurring in the background. The project frames its launch as the beginning of the "Realtime Ethereum era," where "gasless" does not mean free transactions but rather abstracted and budgeted costs that are invisible to end users and manageable for applications and institutions.
ETHGas differentiates itself by treating blockspace as a tradable commodity rather than a spot-only resource. This forward and futures-style market structure allows validators, block builders, and searchers to manage execution risk and cost predictability in advance, which is particularly valuable during periods of network congestion when fee spikes and failed transactions are common. The protocol's pre-confirmation mechanism provides execution guarantees before final block inclusion, reducing effective settlement times for latency-sensitive applications.
The Open Gas Initiative introduces gas abstraction that lets applications and protocols sponsor user gas fees, improving user experience by removing the need to manage variable gas costs directly. ETHGas integrates with existing Ethereum validator software without replacing Ethereum consensus, positioning itself as complementary infrastructure rather than a competing layer.
The project also emphasizes risk mitigation through auditing by Sigma Prime, open-source development practices, and partnerships. It publishes a MiCA-compliant whitepaper, reflecting a focus on regulatory clarity. With billions of dollars flowing through Ethereum gas markets annually, ETHGas aims to transition GWEI holders from passive users into active stewards of blockspace commoditization and the Realtime Ethereum engine.
$GWEI serves as the governance token only. It is not a utility token and is not required to access or use ETHGas or any protocol products or services. $GWEI and any associated governance rights such as $veGWEI act as a coordination mechanism for proposal submission, voting, and delegated decision-making.
Holders who stake $GWEI receive $veGWEI, which carries voting power that increases with longer lockups. This voting power covers critical changes including protocol parameters such as fees, incentives, and collateral factors; supply dynamics such as how protocol fees are utilized to offset emissions or allocate treasury tokens; and smart contract upgrades including migrations or new integrations. $veGWEI supports vote delegation, allowing token holders to delegate voting power to trusted individuals, organizations, or professional delegates while retaining full ownership of their tokens.
The $veGWEI community also governs the protocol treasury, deciding through proposals how to allocate resources for ecosystem initiatives, developer grants, and strategic partnerships. Governance serves as the final authority over protocol upgrades, parameter changes, and emergency actions. $GWEI does not represent or confer any equity, ownership, or membership interest in any entity, nor any right to receive profits, dividends, revenue, fees, buybacks, distributions, or any other economic return from ETHGas, the protocol, the foundation, or any affiliated party. Holding $GWEI is a commitment to operating and governing the protocol and is not a passive investment.
ETHGas launched on Ethereum mainnet in 2025 by a team primarily based in Hong Kong. In late 2025, the project completed a $12 million seed round led by Polychain Capital, joined by Amber Group, BlueYard, and Tokka Labs. In December 2025, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed a trustless, on-chain gas futures market that would allow users to lock in transaction fees, offering greater predictability and a way to hedge against sudden spikes as the network scales.
On January 13, 2026, ETHGas officially launched $GWEI, a governance token designed to transform the way Ethereum handles transaction fees and blockspace allocation, announced via the blog post "Introducing $GWEI, the Engine Behind Realtime Ethereum." On January 16, 2026, the blog post "$GWEI Tokenomics, Governance, and Day-One Staking" was published. The token generation event occurred on January 21, 2026.
ETHGas also announced a community airdrop framed as the "Genesis Harvest," which emphasizes historical gas usage and community verification rather than wallet farming or short-term activity. The project says this approach is meant to reward users who have actually borne the cost of Ethereum's fee system over time. Documentation updates followed in April 2026, and the token reached an all-time high of $0.2491 on June 29, 2026. The ecosystem is designed with a 10-year horizon for growth, with the majority of supply dedicated to the ecosystem and the long-term health of the protocol.
GWEI is not mined through proof-of-work. It is an ERC-20 governance token on Ethereum Mainnet, also deployed on BNB Smart Chain as a BEP20 token. Instead of mining, participants can acquire GWEI through supported venues and engage with the protocol through staking.
Staking GWEI converts it into veGWEI (voting escrow), which carries voting power that increases with longer lockups. Voting power is amplified by the duration of the stake; longer lock durations or higher stake amounts confer proportionately greater voting power. This mechanism protects the protocol from short-term opportunists and rewards long-term believers. The Community Airdrop is separate from the "Community" vesting schedule and is not subject to the 4-year linear vesting. ETHGas is planned to implement a long-term token emission and vesting schedule spanning approximately ten years, as defined in the tokenomics framework.
GWEI is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum Mainnet and a BEP20 token on BNB Smart Chain. To keep your tokens safe, store them in a wallet that supports the network on which you hold them. If your $GWEI is on BNB, you will need to bridge your tokens. Always verify contract addresses before interacting with any token: the Ethereum Mainnet contract is 0x2798b1cC5A993085E8A9D46e80499F1B63f42204 and the BSC contract is 0x30117E4bC17d7B044194b76A38365C53b72F7D49.
