About Firo

What is Firo (FIRO)?

Firo (FIRO), formerly known as Zcoin, is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency designed to function as private digital cash. Launched on 28 September 2016, the project aims to use cryptography to provide better financial privacy than transparent cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Its stated premise is that "your money shouldn't be a tracking device," and it lets users send and receive funds privately, with balances, history, and counterparties hidden by default and visible only to those the user chooses.

The project is best known for creating the Lelantus privacy protocol, which allows users to burn coins and later redeem them for brand-new coins with no transaction history. Before Lelantus, Firo was the first cryptocurrency to code and launch a practical implementation of the Zerocoin protocol, which was later replaced by Sigma and then Lelantus after cryptographic flaws were discovered in Zerocoin in 2019. Firo runs on a proof-of-work consensus mechanism using the Merkle Tree Proof mining algorithm, with a block time of 2.5 minutes and a block reward of 6.25 FIRO. The maximum supply is capped at 21.4 million FIRO, with a circulating supply of roughly 19.04 million FIRO.

Who created Firo?

Firo was founded by Poramin Insom, who earned a master's degree in Information Security from Johns Hopkins University, where he wrote a paper on a proposed practical implementation of the Zerocoin protocol alongside faculty member Matthew Green. Beyond Firo, he is a co-founder of the Satang Corporation and has served as a second lieutenant with the Royal Thai Armed Forces in its cyber warfare division. In September 2017, he set up an exchange named Satang Pro to convert Thai Baht directly to Zcoin.

Reuben Yap joined as co-founder shortly after the launch of Zcoin in 2016 and now leads the project in its overall strategy, development, and research goals. A former lawyer and founder of the VPN service BolehVPN, he has been a vocal advocate of online and financial privacy and assumed the role of Project Steward & Co-Founder in November 2019. Roger Ver was an initial investor in Zcoin. Other developers associated with the project include Peter Shugalev, Andrey Bezrukov, Panu Suksumonsin, Rustam Abrahamyan, Sproxet, and Aram Jivanyan on research.

How does Firo work?

Firo operates as a proof-of-work blockchain derived from the Bitcoin codebase. Its defining feature is its privacy architecture. The Lelantus protocol, created by Firo, lets users burn their coins and redeem them later for entirely new coins that carry no transaction history. Lelantus and its predecessor Sigma rely on a specialized zero-knowledge proof called one-out-of-many proofs, which, unlike some other zero-knowledge constructions, does not require a trusted setup or exotic cryptographic assumptions while still retaining high anonymity sets.

Firo was also the first project to deploy Dandelion++ in October 2018, a transaction propagation method that prevents third parties from linking an IP address to a transaction without relying on Tor or a VPN. On the mining side, the Merkle Tree Proof algorithm, implemented in December 2018, is memory-intensive by design to deter ASIC usage, allowing ordinary users to mine with CPUs and graphics cards. The network also supports features such as Lelantus Spark technology for private balances and transactions, Spark Addresses, InstantSend, and masternodes that require locking 1,000 FIRO.

What makes Firo unique and valuable?

Firo's core differentiator is its long-standing focus on practical financial privacy. Its Lelantus privacy protocol and its predecessor Sigma use one-out-of-many proofs that avoid trusted setups and exotic cryptographic assumptions while maintaining strong anonymity sets. This design choice distinguishes it from privacy systems that depend on trusted ceremonies or complex mathematics.

The project has a track record of privacy-firsts: it was the first cryptocurrency to implement the Zerocoin protocol in practice, the first to deploy Dandelion++ in October 2018, and it introduced the Sigma protocol in July 2019 to remove the trusted setup from Zerocoin and prevent counterfeit privacy coins from inflating supply. Firo has also demonstrated real-world utility, including its use in the Thai Democrat Party's primary election in November 2018, where over 127,000 votes were cast nationwide on its blockchain. Its tagline positioning, "Private money, for everyone. No surveillance. No trails. No compromises," reflects its mission to set privacy standards for digital cash.

What is Firo used for?

Firo is used primarily as private digital cash. Users can send and receive FIRO with balances, transaction history, and payment counterparties hidden by default, revealing information only to parties they choose. This makes it suitable for private payments, shopping, trading, and accepting funds on the user's own terms.

The token also plays a role in network participation. Users can mine FIRO with a GPU to earn block rewards, or lock 1,000 FIRO to set up a masternode and earn passive income. Firo's ecosystem extends its utility through products such as Spark Assets, FiroDEX, RosenBridge, Campfire for mobile use, Practical Spark Names, Spark Addresses, and InstantSend. Historically, FIRO has been accepted by merchants and used in charitable and civic applications, including a liquor delivery service in Malaysia and a blockchain-tracked charity fundraising program in Africa.

How Is the Firo ecosystem developing?

Firo maintains an active development status, with its latest release, 0.14.13.2, published on 16 February 2024. The project continues to build around its Lelantus Spark technology, which provides state-of-the-art private balances and transactions with strong anonymity sets, alongside supporting infrastructure such as Spark Addresses, Practical Spark Names, Spark Assets, FiroDEX, RosenBridge, and Campfire for mobile access.

Governance and funding have evolved through a decentralized crowdfunding and decision-making system introduced in December 2019 to fund ancillary tasks. In July 2020, this system raised US$22,500 from 89 contributors to fund the first phase of a third-party audit of the Lelantus protocol. In February 2025, Firo published a correction regarding its reported circulating supply and market capitalization on data aggregators, noting that an outdated API dating back to the Zcoin era had incorrectly reported its supply as 14,701,999. The project remains a nonprofit organization founded in 2016.

How to mine Firo?

Firo uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism with the Merkle Tree Proof algorithm, which was implemented in December 2018. This algorithm is deliberately memory-intensive to deter the use of ASICs, enabling ordinary users to mine with CPUs and graphics cards and promoting egalitarianism in coin mining. Miners earn block rewards of 6.25 FIRO per block, with a block time of 2.5 minutes.

Beyond mining, participants can set up a masternode by locking 1,000 FIRO to earn passive income. The project has also ceased all founder rewards as of May 2020, meaning block rewards flow to network participants rather than the founding team. Those who prefer not to mine or run a masternode can acquire FIRO through exchanges, DEXs, and swap services, or use Campfire to access Firo on a mobile phone.

How to keep your Firo Coin safe?

Because Firo is privacy-focused digital cash, safeguarding your holdings requires attention to both key security and personal operational privacy. Store your FIRO in a reputable wallet and keep your private keys or seed phrase offline and backed up in multiple secure locations. Never share your seed phrase with anyone, and be cautious of phishing attempts that impersonate wallets, exchanges, or the Firo project itself.

When acquiring FIRO, use established platforms and verify official resources such as the Firo website and block explorer before acting on any link or instruction. For those running masternodes or mining operations, secure the machines that hold your collateral and reward addresses, and keep node software updated to the latest release. Since privacy is central to Firo's value proposition, also consider how your network activity, transaction patterns, and device hygiene could reveal information you intend to keep private, and take steps to minimize those leaks in your own environment.
