View ChartPolkadot is an open-source multichain protocol and layer-0 protocol that unites an entire network of purpose-built blockchains, allowing them to operate seamlessly together as a unified, scalable network. It connects and secures a network of specialized blockchains, facilitating cross-chain transfer of any data or asset types, not just tokens, thereby allowing blockchains to be interoperable with each other. Polkadot provides a foundation to support a decentralized web, controlled by its users.
Polkadot provides a foundation to support a decentralized web, controlled by its users, and to simplify the creation of new applications, institutions, and services.
The Polkadot protocol can connect public and private chains, permissionless networks, oracles, and future technologies, allowing these independent blockchains to trustlessly share information and transactions through the Polkadot Relay Chain.
Polkadot's native DOT token serves three clear purposes: staking for operations and security, facilitating network governance, and bonding tokens to connect parachains.
On September 15, 2025, Polkadot set a 2.1 billion DOT cap to reshape tokenomics, introducing scarcity to its tokenomics. The hard cap was activated on March 14, 2026 through an on-chain governance vote, replacing Polkadot's previous uncapped inflationary model that minted roughly 120 million new DOT per year. Annual issuance was reduced by 53.6% to approximately 57 million DOT per year, cutting token inflation from approximately 7–10% to roughly 3.1%.
Maximum supply is capped at 2.1 billion DOT. Circulating supply is approximately 1.7 billion DOT, and current total supply is approximately 1.6 billion DOT.
Polkadot is a next-generation blockchain protocol and layer-0 protocol that unites an entire network of purpose-built blockchains, allowing them to operate seamlessly together as a unified, scalable network. Because they don't talk to each other, dApps developed on Ethereum and Cardano couldn't work together.
Polkadot is useful in that situation. Because it is a multichain network, it is able to connect multiple blockchains. Developers that utilize it have the ability to construct their own blockchains that can communicate with every other blockchain in the Polkadot network.
New opportunities for Polkadot's blockchains arise as a result of interoperability. Assume for the sake of argument that one blockchain permits the purchase of tokenized stock. It may be able to access the most recent stock price information from an independent blockchain.
Developers also benefit from Polkadot's handling of transaction validation and network security. The relay chain of the network processes the transactions. Developers won't have to worry about creating a safe method for validating transactions, freeing them to concentrate solely on blockchain initiatives.
There are thousands of cryptocurrencies across the ecosystem, a vast majority of which can't communicate with each other. Polkadot aims to fix that by building a framework that interconnects blockchains, even if each chain performs different functions to one another.
At the center of Polkadot sits the "relay chain," a central blockchain that connects all other participating blockchains together. The relay chain processes all transactions taking place in the ecosystem at the same time, with the goal of improving scalability.
User-created blockchains that hook into the relay chain are known as "parachains." Parachains enjoy three properties: sovereignty, meaning individual blockchains are sovereign in the way they conduct themselves; shared security, meaning one chain provides cryptoeconomic security to other chains; and interoperability, created through a common standard of data exchange called XCM. By allowing blockchains to communicate with its platform, Polkadot is able to connect many blockchains in a way that wasn't possible before.
Polkadot relies on Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS), a consensus mechanism that allows token holders to nominate validators to secure the network and process transactions. In May 2020, Polkadot launched its mainnet under a proof-of-authority consensus model, managed by the Web3 Foundation during its early phase. By June 2020, the network transitioned to NPoS.
Gavin Wood is the founder of Polkadot, a co-founder of Ethereum, and the creator of the Solidity programming language. Robert Habermeier and Peter Czaban are co-founders of Polkadot. Parity Technologies, a blockchain infrastructure company founded in 2015 by Gavin Wood and Jutta Steiner, develops the Polkadot SDK. The Web3 Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Zug, Switzerland, established in 2017, managed the network during its early phase.
Polkadot held an initial coin offering (ICO) in October 2017, raising over $144.3 million. A private token sale in 2019 raised an additional $43 million. After the ICO, a vulnerability in the multi-signature wallets developed by Parity Technologies led to the freezing of approximately $150 million worth of Ethereum. Over 500 wallets were impacted, including Polkadot's wallet.
21Shares Polkadot Trust (TDOT) launched on Nasdaq on March 6, 2026 as the first US-listed spot Polkadot exchange-traded product, holding physical DOT with Coinbase as custodian. The fund charges a 0.30% management fee, reduced to 0.09% through October 2026.
On March 19, 2026, an SEC/CFTC interpretation named Polkadot (DOT) as a digital commodity, outlining how tokens are treated under U.S. securities laws.
The DOT token is used for staking and governance, and it can be bought or sold on Coinbase and other exchanges. Unstaking starts a 28-day unbonding period, and leaving a nomination pool unbonds too. Only after it ends can you send or sell the DOT. An account that drops below the minimum of 0.01 DOT is closed and the rest is removed.
DOT's price can be highly volatile, and its value may rise or fall significantly. Regulatory policies in different jurisdictions may change and could affect how DOT and related products can be used, traded, or offered. Technical risks, including vulnerabilities in blockchain infrastructure and smart contracts, may also affect the network. The points above are not exhaustive, and readers should do their own research before participating.
