View Chartcheqd is a decentralised infrastructure network for credentials and AI agents, built to support digital identity, verifiable credentials, agentic ecosystems and trusted data payments. The project leverages blockchain and Self-Sovereign Identity technologies to shift control of personal data back to individuals, allowing them to own and manage their information securely and transparently. Through a public, permissionless network, cheqd facilitates Trusted Data Marketplaces where data can be exchanged in a secure, efficient and privacy-preserving manner. The network is built on the Cosmos ecosystem using Cosmos-SDK and Tendermint, and also operates on the Ethereum platform. cheqd launched its testnet in July 2021 and its mainnet in October 2021, introducing the CHEQ token to facilitate transactions within the network. At inception, cheqd minted a total of 1 billion CHEQ tokens, with a max supply of 1,243,225,903 CHEQ and a total supply of approximately 1.27 billion CHEQ. The project is positioned within the Identity category and continues to develop its product suite, including cheqd Studio, Creds and Verifiable AI offerings.
cheqd was founded in April 2021 by Fraser Edwards and Ankur Banerjee. Fraser Edwards serves as CEO and Co-Founder, while Ankur Banerjee is CTO and Co-Founder, also referenced as a Board Member and Strategic Advisor. Javed Khattak is the CFO. Ross Power and Alex Tweeddale co-authored cheqd's Product Reflections 2022. The company had 8 employees as of May 26 according to a Tracxn company profile. Following the cheqd and Dock Alliance, the Dock team joined the ecosystem, including Nick Lambert as Co-founder and CEO of Dock, and Elina Cadouri as Co-founder and COO of Dock. cheqd raised $2.6 million to drive the uptake of digital IDs, backed by Outlier Ventures, Evernym, Cosmos' Ignite and private investors.
cheqd operates as an application-specific blockchain network built with Cosmos-SDK and Tendermint, secured by a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism in which the CHEQ token forms the basis of the staking algorithm. The platform consists of a ledger following DID method specification, a client SDK and a Ledger Browser that provide interaction with the network. Core technology centres on Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials, enabling users to create, hold and share personal data without relying on centralized authorities. The platform supports various credential formats and complies with identity frameworks such as eIDAS 2.0 in Europe. DSR Corporation assisted in the development of cheqd's entire Self-Sovereign Identity ecosystem, including the Proof-of-Stake SSI network, SSI transactions, ICO, token launch and integration of the token with crypto exchange platforms. DSR led the design, development and implementation of most components of the cheqd Ledger, developed the CHEQ token, performed the Initial Coin Offering and integrated with wallets and decentralized exchange platforms.
cheqd distinguishes itself by turning Self-Sovereign Identity into real-world infrastructure spanning healthcare, HR, supply chains, travel, e-commerce and Verifiable AI. The network addresses critical challenges in the digital identity space, such as the high costs and inefficiencies associated with identity verification processes and the overwhelming management of personal passwords. By offering a decentralized network for digital identity payments, cheqd aims to reduce these burdens for both individuals and organizations. The project's main offerings include Verifiable AI, which empowers the agentic economy through cheqd's payment infrastructure, content authenticity using content verifiable credentials and proof of humanity through decentralised reputation. The cheqd network provides DID and payment capabilities across use-cases, industries and geographies through partners and SDKs. cheqd Studio offers SaaS for cheqd capabilities including DIDs, Trust Registries and Payments, while Creds serves as a verifiable credential issuer, reputation system builder and proof of personhood platform. A meta-analysis by cheqd found the Self-Sovereign Identity market is worth over $550 billion.
The CHEQ token serves multiple functions within the cheqd ecosystem. First, identity transactions require a fee paid in CHEQ tokens when creating or updating a DID, helping maintain network integrity. Second, credential payments use CHEQ tokens to pay issuers when verifying credentials, facilitating secure and trusted data exchanges and creating a commercial incentive for participants to share data securely. Third, governance participation allows CHEQ holders to influence decisions about the network's future, development and policies, ensuring a democratic and user-centric development of the network. Fourth, staking and rewards enable CHEQ tokens to be staked to support network security and earn rewards in return. The project's mission is about redefining the economics of personal data, and the CHEQ token gains potential value only through the protocol, its use and through continual use of Verifiable Credentials.
The cheqd ecosystem continues to expand through strategic partnerships and product development. Vouched integrated with cheqd to bring decentralised identity to AI agents, with Vouched's Know Your Agent suite now integrating cheqd's decentralised identity. Dock Labs and cheqd formed an alliance to accelerate global adoption of Decentralized ID, with the Dock and cheqd tokens and blockchains merging to form a Decentralized ID alliance. Indacoin announced a strategic partnership with cheqd. The 2024 product roadmap includes developing proof-of-concept solutions for credential payments in fiat currency, exploring AI and ad-tech use cases, researching on-chain activity credentials, upgrading the network to the latest version of the Cosmos SDK and implementing selective disclosure credentials. cheqd published a tokenomics blog series covering context, utility, governance, payment models and circulating supply explanations, with documentation available on GitHub.
cheqd does not use traditional mining. Instead, the network operates on a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism where CHEQ tokens can be staked to support network security and earn rewards in return. Token holders participate in staking by locking their CHEQ tokens, which helps maintain the integrity and security of the ledger. The CHEQ token is the basis of the proof-of-stake algorithm the ledger is built on. Staking rewards provide an incentive for participants to contribute to network security while earning a return on their holdings. Detailed staking parameters and network incentives are documented in cheqd's tokenomics materials, which explain the utility through parameters such as initial supply, inflation and governance.
Keeping CHEQ tokens safe requires following established security practices for cryptocurrency assets. Use official wallets and client applications referenced by cheqd, including the client SDK and Ledger Browser that provide interaction with the network. Store private keys and seed phrases securely offline, never sharing them with anyone. Verify contract addresses and official URLs before interacting with any platform, using the official website at cheqd.io and documentation at docs.cheqd.io as reference points. Be aware that crypto markets are known for volatility, and cheqd has been estimated as 7.06% volatile. The CHEQ token has declined significantly from its all-time high, and the project itself notes that the token is worthless in itself and gains potential value only through the protocol, its use and through continual use of Verifiable Credentials. Always conduct thorough research before making any investment decisions.
