View ChartTRON (TRX) is the native cryptocurrency of Tron: a blockchain-based platform with two main functions. First, it serves as a global online content sharing platform, and secondly, it allows developers to create their own autonomous applications that operate without the need for intermediaries.
Tron is one of many cryptocurrency projects vying to decentralize the internet with blockchain technology. It is a platform built specifically for peer-to-peer file sharing with the goal of competing with centralized media tech giants such as YouTube.
TRON is also one of the most popular blockchains for building DApps. TRON supports the TRC-20 token standard, which lets creators and developers issue their own tokens on the network.
In 2017, a blockchain-based project called Tron was created. Justin Sun founded TRON and the TRON Foundation in 2017; in late 2021 he resigned as CEO and the Foundation was reorganized as TRON DAO.
TRON's design reuses established components — it uses a UTXO-style transaction model similar to Bitcoin and a three-layer architecture (storage, core, application) — and has been described by researchers as an Ethereum clone with no fundamental differences.
One thing that set Tron apart was its marketing approach, which was centered around the Asian market and focused mostly on promoting its creator and founder, Justin Sun. The success of the futuristic-sounding Tron is hardly surprising, given the community’s level of activity and enthusiasm.
In March 2023, the U.S. SEC sued Justin Sun and Tron for selling unregistered securities and alleged wash trading in TRX; the case remains a material regulatory risk.
TRX began as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum; the TRON mainnet launched in May 2018, and in June 2018 the token migrated to TRON's own independent network.
One of the ideas around which the Tronix network is based is decentralization. No one entity has any control over the data stored on the blockchain, and it is entirely free to use. As an incentive for sharing their work, content providers can earn the TRX token. TRX is used to pay network fees under the bandwidth/energy model, to stake for resources and rewards, and to vote in governance for Super Representatives.
Making one’s own token on the Tron network is also an option for creators. Within users’ own network-based decentralized applications (dApps), these tokens can thereafter be utilized. As a foundation, the primary TRX token supports these newly-minted tokens.
The inclusion of Tron network gaming support is the last component of the network development plan. There would be no central authority in these games, and players may tip the developers directly if they liked their work.
On 25 July 2018, the TRON Foundation completed its acquisition of BitTorrent, the peer-to-peer file-sharing service, and in February 2019 BitTorrent launched its own token sale on the TRON network.
A delegated proof-of-stake consensus mechanism lies at the heart of Tron’s operation. TRON uses Delegated Proof of Stake with 27 elected Super Representatives who take turns validating transactions and producing blocks; block rewards go to the producing Super Representative and its voters.
New blocks are produced roughly every three seconds, and the Super Representative that produces a block receives 32 TRX in block rewards.
When compared to other cryptocurrencies, Tron stands out due to the unique viewpoint and objectives it provides to the market. TRX uses a bandwidth-and-energy resource model: holders obtain computing resources through staking, and small fees are charged mainly to deter spam and DDoS attacks. The network is designed to handle roughly 2,000 transactions per second.
TRX holders who stake their tokens can vote to elect the 27 Super Representatives, and candidates compete for those seats through community voting. Even more importantly, the platform’s capacity to pay creators without taking any ownership of their work is a brilliant idea.
TRON is the largest USDT network globally, carrying the largest USDT supply of any blockchain and processing the majority of global USDT transfer volume.
As of October 2026, TRON reported more than 405 million accounts, over 15 billion total transactions, and more than $28 billion in TVL.
TRX has no hard-capped maximum supply; its supply expands through block rewards and contracts through fee burning, a burn-and-issuance model.
Like other cryptocurrencies, TRX is subject to significant price volatility, and its value can rise or fall sharply over short periods. Regulatory treatment of TRX and the broader TRON network remains uncertain in many jurisdictions, and future rules or enforcement actions could affect how the token can be used, traded, or offered. The network also carries technical risks, including smart contract vulnerabilities, potential network disruptions, and the possibility that upgrades or security measures may not perform as intended. These factors mean that holding or using TRX involves risk, and nothing here should be read as a guarantee of future performance.
