View ChartLoopring (LRC) is the Ethereum-based cryptocurrency token of Loopring, an open-source Layer 2 protocol built to make Ethereum faster and cheaper through advanced zero-knowledge rollups, specifically zkRollups and zkSNARK rollup technology. The protocol was designed to support scalable, non-custodial decentralized exchanges by combining centralized order matching with decentralized on-blockchain settlement. LRC is an ERC-20 token with a fixed supply of approximately 1.37 billion coins. Loopring was founded in 2017 and first deployed on the Ethereum mainnet in December 2019. According to the official Loopring website, the project has shut down and is no longer operational, a critical status update for anyone researching LRC today.
Loopring was founded by Daniel Wang, who served as Founder and CEO of the Loopring Foundation, the entity managing the development of the Loopring protocol. Wang is a software engineer and entrepreneur based in Shanghai, China. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Science and Technology of China and a master's degree in the same field from Arizona State University. His prior experience includes roles as lead software engineer at Boston Scientific, senior director of engineering for search, recommendation and ads systems at JD.com, and tech lead and senior software engineer at Google. He also worked for Nuance Communications and ran a centralized exchange called Coin Port in 2014. Steve Guo served as Loopring CTO. Detailed public information on the broader core team is currently limited.
Loopring operates as an open Layer 2 protocol on Ethereum that uses zero-knowledge rollups to bundle transactions off-chain and settle them on-chain. Its smart contracts and zero-knowledge proof circuits allow multiple exchanges to mix and match orders, handle off-chain order matching, and conduct on-chain transaction clearing and payments. This architecture delivers higher throughput and lower settlement costs without sacrificing Ethereum-level security guarantees. Traders using Loopring never have to deposit funds into an exchange to begin trading, as funds always remain in user wallets and are never frozen by orders. The network functions as a gas-free route for users to deposit and withdraw Ethereum-based assets, with fees that may go as low as one-hundredth of an Ethereum transaction cost. Loopring is blockchain-agnostic and can run on any public blockchain that wishes to integrate it.
Loopring's primary distinction is its hybrid model, combining centralized order matching with decentralized on-blockchain order settlement to capture the best aspects of both exchange types. It shields traders from counterparty risk and reduces trading costs while preserving complete user autonomy over funds. The protocol's zkRollup design enables trades at a fraction of the cost of Ethereum directly. Loopring also pursued cross-chain compatibility beyond Ethereum and contributed to the evolution of the DeFi ecosystem by offering functional, easy-to-use decentralized trading solutions. Its collaboration with the blockchain association at the University of California, Berkeley, further extended its academic and research reach. These attributes made Loopring a notable infrastructure project during the Layer 2 scaling wave.
LRC serves several key utilities within the Loopring protocol. It is used for staking, protocol fees, and as a bond that DEXes can post to follow protocol-defined behavior. In the original economic structure, LRC stakers who locked up tokens for a minimum of 90 days earned fees from the protocol. Under the revised economic structure introduced in January 2021, protocol fees are distributed as 80% to liquidity providers on Loopring order books and automated market makers, 10% to insurers, and 10% to Loopring's decentralized autonomous organization. LRC holders can also participate in governance through the DAO. The token is transferable on Ethereum as a standard ERC-20 asset.
Loopring's most prominent ecosystem development came in March 2022, when video game retail company GameStop announced it had built its new NFT marketplace atop the Loopring Layer-2 protocol. Loopring served as the underlying infrastructure for the NFT platform developed by GameStop, and following the announcement the value of LRC rose significantly to $3.83, its highest level ever. The project also established a significant collaboration with the blockchain association at the University of California, Berkeley, and sought to extend cross-chain compatibility to run on blockchains in addition to Ethereum. However, the official Loopring website now states that Loopring has shut down and is no longer operational, meaning the ecosystem is no longer actively developing.
LRC is not a mineable proof-of-work cryptocurrency. It is an ERC-20 token issued on Ethereum with a fixed supply, so there is no mining process for generating new LRC. Instead, token holders could previously participate in staking, where LRC was locked up for a minimum of 90 days to earn protocol fees under the original economic model. Following the January 2021 economic restructure, protocol fees were redirected to liquidity providers, insurers, and the Loopring DAO rather than directly to stakers. Given that the project has shut down and is no longer operational, staking and protocol-based reward mechanisms are no longer active.
Because LRC is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, it can be stored in any wallet that supports Ethereum-based assets, including self-custody wallets where you control your own private keys. Hardware wallets offer strong protection against online threats by keeping keys offline. Always back up your seed phrase and store it securely offline, never share it with anyone, and be cautious of phishing sites and fake wallet applications. Since Loopring's smart contracts and protocol are no longer operational, users should be especially careful about interacting with any third-party platforms claiming to offer Loopring-related services. Verify contract addresses directly on etherscan.io before approving any transactions, and consider moving assets to secure, well-reviewed wallets for long-term holding.
