About Internet Computer

The Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) is more than just a cryptocurrency, similar to many other projects in the cryptocurrency sector. The ICP coin available for purchase and trade on platforms like Coinbase is actually a subset of a much larger concept.

As an alternative to cloud services provided by companies like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, the core concept behind ICP is to establish a new global computing system and decentralized internet. This would involve autonomous data centers located all over the globe coming together to form a single network. The goal of ICP's protocol is to be installed on millions of computers globally.

The creators of ICP claim that, compared to centralized solutions, the resultant network offers several significant benefits. One advantage is that it uses open standards for operation, which prevents big cloud providers from dealing with potential conflicts of interest when they host competing products.

With its worldwide and dispersed network of data centers, ICP (formerly DFINITY) is able to run any application that can be accessed by conventional Internet protocols, such as DNS (the domain name system used on your phone or computer).

The ICP token serves multiple purposes: first, as a payment for network transactions; second, as a reward for participating data centers for good behavior; and third, as a governance token, enabling holders to "lock" a portion of their ICP into the network in return for a voice in the protocol's future development.

What is ICP Token?

In May 2018, DFINITY announced its plan to distribute 35 million Swiss francs worth of DFINITY tokens in an airdrop to promote "cloud 3.0" to community members and help them become early users. DFINITY launched its alpha main network on December 18, 2018. Internet computers are currently supported by 48 independent data centers in North America, Europe, and Asia, with a total of 1,300 nodes. It is estimated that the network will grow exponentially to support the next generation of large-scale DApps.

At genesis, there are up to 469,213,710 ICP tokens, and the circulating supply depends on market dynamics. At the time of creation, it is estimated that 23.86% of the tokens were held by the DFINITY foundation, 18% by Internet Computer team members, 24.72% by seed donors, 9.5% by early contributors, and the rest were distributed to investors at other levels and strategic partners.

How Does ICP Work?

Nowadays, the Internet is very centralized. Many of the most widely used web apps are proprietary, closed-source, and hosted by a small number of data centers controlled by large technology companies. Furthermore, large portions of the web can go down simultaneously with the failure of a single crucial data center. The power to restrict or deplatform programs by centralized, corporate web-service providers is another major concern, especially for privacy activists.

Websites can be launched straight onto the public internet thanks to the Internet Computer, which aims to provide a basic option for developers by facilitating a more decentralized approach to application development, hosting, and serving. Open-source and transparent software development would be encouraged by the Internet Computer.

If the Internet Computer were described in the MIT Technology Review's profile, it would "move between servers owned by independent data centers around the world" rather than "run on a dedicated server in Google Cloud," as an example.

Imagine ICP as a means of exchanging cryptocurrency for computational power; the network will set a price according to the amount of processing power needed by a developer's project. The website will be able to access the public internet once the cost is paid.

From social networks like LinkedIn and TikTok to software like all the apps you know and love, to whole new apps that haven't even been thought of yet, the Internet makes it possible to build and run any form of program. The CanCan project, which the ICP team calls a "decentralized TikTok," has its source code made publicly available as a proof of concept.

What Dangers could the Internet Computer Face?

By restricting the number of possible participants, the Internet Computer's decentralization ethos may be threatened by the requirement for more powerful hardware than other blockchain initiatives. Only large, well-funded companies would be able to construct data centers and take part if the hardware requirements were too high.

Furthermore, who is responsible for hosting offensive content in a fully decentralized network? Today's Internet companies use some type of moderation, but they also have the power to remove users from the platform at any time. Ideally, solutions that enable decentralized governance to regulate these challenging issues can be developed by Internet Computer (and other crypto protocols).

There are several protocols trying to reimagine the Internet besides Internet Computer. Other potential rivals are MIT's Solid (developed by web pioneer Tim Berners-Lee) and IPFS/Filecoin.

Internet Computer FAQs

What Is ICP? Canister & Web3 Guide

Internet Computer (ICP) is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation, aiming to transform the internet into a decentralized cloud computing platform. Key features include:
1. Canister Smart Contracts: Advanced smart contracts that combine code and data state. A single Canister can scale memory to dozens of gigabytes, supporting full-stack web applications and DApps.
2. Reverse Gas Mechanism: Developers top up Cycles for Canisters in advance, allowing users to interact with on-chain apps instantly and fee-free, delivering a smooth Web2-like experience.
2. 100% On-Chain Web3 Hosting: Frontend, backend logic, and databases are deployed directly on the blockchain, completely eliminating reliance on traditional cloud services like AWS or Google Cloud.

What Is ICP Chain Fusion?

Chain Fusion is ICP's native integration technology that solves the security bottlenecks of traditional cross-chain bridges, which are frequently targeted by hacks:
1. Chain-Key Cryptography: Based on threshold ECDSA/Schnorr protocols, allowing ICP nodes to directly create and sign native transactions on Bitcoin and Ethereum networks.
2. Bridge-Free Native Assets (ckBTC & ckETH): ckBTC is 1:1 backed and 100% verified on-chain with real BTC, removing reliance on custodians or centralized bridge contracts to maximize security and cross-chain liquidity.
3. Direct Multi-Chain Contract Calls: ICP Canisters can directly read and write states across Solana, Bitcoin, and EVM chains, serving as an intelligent hub connecting the entire crypto ecosystem.

On-Chain AI on ICP vs Web2 Cloud

ICP leads innovation in On-Chain AI and decentralized cloud computing:
1. On-Chain LLM Execution: Canisters support WebAssembly (Wasm) SIMD instructions and native GPU processing, enabling the successful execution of Large Language Models (LLMs) and image recognition models directly on-chain.
2. Verifiable Decentralized AI: AI inference and data computations run across a distributed node network, ensuring algorithm results are tamper-proof and fully verifiable.
3. Ultra-Low Storage & Compute Costs: On-chain data storage on ICP costs around $5 per GB annually, significantly cheaper than traditional blockchains like Ethereum, making it highly competitive with Web2 cloud infrastructure.

ICP vs AWS vs Ethereum: Comparison

A comparative analysis of key features and architecture among Internet Computer (ICP), traditional Web2 cloud (AWS), and Ethereum (ETH):

DimensionInternet Computer (ICP)AWS (Amazon Cloud)Ethereum (ETH)
Architecture & StorageCanister architecture, WebAssembly support, 100% full-stack on-chain data and logicCentralized server clusters, high flexibility, but single point of failure and censorship risksEthereum Virtual Machine (EVM), ledger and light logic focus, extremely high storage costs
Decentralization & CensorshipIndependent data center nodes and NNS governance, high censorship and fault resistanceFully centralized, controlled by a single company, subject to laws and shutdown ordersHigh decentralization (global validators), strong censorship resistance, scaling via Layer 2
Gas Fees & Payment ModelReverse gas model (pre-paid Cycles), developer pays, user free (Web2-like experience)Pay-as-you-go, developers or businesses pay in fiat currency per cycleUser-pays model, transaction sender covers high and volatile ETH gas fees per transaction
Performance & SpeedQueries in milliseconds, state updates (Update) in 1–2 seconds, high throughputInstantaneous response in milliseconds, global CDN and massive throughputApprox. 15–30 transactions per second, slower confirmation and congestion during peak hours

Summary: ICP combines the high-performance cloud compute power of AWS with the decentralized trust of Ethereum, establishing a new standard for on-chain cloud infrastructure.

ICP Futures Trading: Setting TP and SL

Properly setting Take Profit and Stop Loss (TP/SL) is critical for risk management when trading ICP perpetual contracts:
1. Setting Stop Loss (SL): For Long positions, place your SL 1% to 3% below key support; for Short positions, above resistance, strictly controlling maximum risk per trade.
2. Setting Take Profit (TP): Base your targets on previous swing highs/lows or Fibonacci extension levels to maintain a Risk/Reward ratio above 1:2.
3. Trigger Price Configuration: It is recommended to select 'Mark Price' as the trigger condition to avoid unnecessary liquidations caused by temporary wicks in the spot market.
