Audius was founded in January 2018 by Roneil Rumburg and Forrest Browning, two California-based entrepreneurs. He remains chief executive as of July 2025. Audius operates as a decentralized music streaming protocol with four main ecosystem participants: artists, fans, content nodes, and discovery nodes. Content nodes are user-operated and handle the hosting of content as well as access to it. Discovery nodes index content, and the discovery protocol allows users to query metadata easily. The content ledger has several layers, including the Ethereum blockchain, the POA network, and Layer-1 or Layer-2 blockchain networks, serving as the system's brain and the centrepiece of the Audius protocol. Music is streamed at 320kbps, comparable to standards of major streaming services. The protocol uses a track encryption technique combined with a programmable system for unlocking specific proxy re-encryption keys for material. Node software has evolved: older versions described dedicated content nodes and discovery nodes, while the newer Open Audio node software describes validator nodes and RPC nodes. Operators register onchain and stake AUDIO, while the software stores, serves and indexes the information applications need.
Audius aims to align the interests of artists, fans, and node operators through its platform powered by the native AUDIO token. It cuts out the middlemen in the music business, directly connecting artists to their fans, and is run by an open-source community including fans, artists, and developers. The platform offers free listening and unlimited artist uploads, promotes high-quality audio, and does not put ordinary streaming behind an AUDIO balance. Artists can sell tracks, albums, stems and instrumentals directly, with Audius taking a 10 percent network fee on direct music sales and making the remaining 90 percent available to the artist. AUDIO is the platform's protocol token with several core utilities. Node operators stake AUDIO to run the Audius protocol. Artists and curators stake AUDIO to unlock exclusive features and services. AUDIO enables network security, exclusive feature access, and community-owned governance. Holders can delegate AUDIO and participate in governance. It provides liquidity behind Audius Artist Coins. Artists can leverage AUDIO to grow and better engage their fan base, and fans can pay to listen to music tracks on the platform. By staking AUDIO, artists can access content distribution tools to distribute their artist tokens to fans, who can directly support artists with AUDIO tokens. It is not required to listen to ordinary music or upload a track, and paid music is generally priced through conventional payment methods or stablecoins rather than AUDIO alone. Each Artist Coin has a total supply of 1,000,000,000 coins with an initial market cap of 10,000 $AUDIO.
The Audius ecosystem continues to expand through product releases and new initiatives. Audius Agency, introduced on April 21, 2025, pairs artists with a team of dedicated builders who work alongside them to craft a distinctive, fully customized music offering. The Audius Summer Cypher, announced on July 1, offers prizes of 3,000 $AUDIO each, featuring artists on Audius Instagram. Fan Clubs: A Guide for Artists and Fans was published on October 20, 2025. The protocol continues to have Ethereum-origin staking and governance infrastructure while moving high-frequency activity toward Solana.
AUDIO is not mined through traditional proof-of-work mining. Instead, the network relies on staking mechanisms. Node operators stake AUDIO to run the Audius protocol, and the newer Open Audio node software describes validator nodes and RPC nodes where operators register onchain and stake AUDIO. Artists and curators stake AUDIO to unlock exclusive features and services. Holders can delegate AUDIO and participate in governance. The token is not hard capped, and new AUDIO can be issued as staking and ecosystem rewards under parameters controlled through governance. This staking-based model secures the network and incentivizes participation without energy-intensive mining.
Keeping AUDIO safe requires attention to network compatibility and secure storage practices. AUDIO exists on multiple chains: Ethereum AUDIO and Solana AUDIO connected through bridge infrastructure are not interchangeable at the address level.
