Nvidia Earnings Tonight: The Critical Test for the AI Bull Market—How Should You Trade?

The deeper trading logic lies in whether the Rubin platform can open the next higher-base growth curve, and whether the circular financing controversy can be clarified will determine if the valuation narrative can complete its shift.
Nvidia's earnings this quarter are likely to remain strong, but the market's question is no longer "will it beat expectations," but whether it can provide sufficient answers after beating. From options pricing to institutional divergence, from circular financing disputes to power bottlenecks, this earnings report is becoming a litmus test for whether the AI bull market can enter its next phase.
After the U.S. market close on Wednesday, Nvidia will report fiscal 2027 second-quarter earnings. Wall Street consensus expects quarterly revenue of about $92 billion, nearly doubling year-over-year; adjusted EPS is expected at $2.09, with data center revenue expected at about $85.4 billion. Jefferies expects revenue to exceed consensus, reaching $95 billion; Citi also raised its forecast and maintains a $300 price target. But Goldman Sachs warns that with the stock already up more than 12% in August, "beating earnings and raising guidance" is not enough to drive the stock higher; it also needs to simultaneously release three positives: improving hyperscaler profitability, manageable customer financing, and large-scale capital returns.
Options market pricing confirms this caution. According to ORATS data, Nvidia's implied volatility move before earnings is about 5.4%, the lowest since August 2021 and significantly below the 7.4% historical average over the past 12 quarters.
ORATS founder Matt Amberson notes that in the past eight earnings reports, actual stock moves have been smaller than options implied, "options buyers have been overpaying for this event premium, and prices have started to correct." This means for investors bullish on the AI theme, relatively cheap options offer an asymmetric participation window; but if management cannot answer the long-term questions the market truly cares about, low volatility expectations could also be broken.
Earnings Expectation Divergence: Both Bulls and Bears Have Grounds
Current sell-side institutions are broadly optimistic about this quarter's fundamentals, but divergence centers on the stock's path after the earnings release.
Jefferies expects Nvidia's July quarter revenue of $95 billion and October quarter guidance of about $108 billion, both above consensus of about $91.9 billion and $103.7 billion. Morgan Stanley is relatively conservative, expecting about $91.2 billion for the July quarter and about $102.3 billion for the October quarter, but believes quarterly revenue could still increase by about $10 billion sequentially. Citi maintains a Buy rating and $300 price target, noting that Nvidia has locked in HBM memory supply for 2026-2027, providing assurance for stable delivery.
Morgan Stanley maintains an Overweight rating and Top Pick status with a $288 price target, noting that Nvidia's current valuation of about 17x FY28 P/E is not expensive relative to its own history, semiconductor peers, and the broader market. However, the bank also emphasizes that over the past four quarters, even when Nvidia delivered strong results, the stock still reacted negatively the next day, and the market has come to view "beating expectations" as the baseline scenario.
Prediction market data also reflects this split: the probability of Nvidia beating earnings expectations is as high as 96%, but the probability of the stock closing above $220 after earnings is only 43%.
Rubin Cycle: The Key Word for the Next Valuation Narrative
In the short term, Blackwell demand remains strong, with improvements in Microsoft and Amazon cloud businesses and long-term compute commitments from OpenAI and SpaceX continuing to support data center revenue confidence. But the market has already set its sights further—whether the Rubin platform can open the next higher-base growth curve will be the core topic of this earnings call.
Jefferies believes Rubin's ramp could be significantly faster than Blackwell's early days. A key reason is that Rubin continues the 72-GPU Oberon NVL72 rack form factor, allowing reuse of the liquid-cooled data center deployment and manufacturing base accumulated from GB200 and GB300. The new generation design also greatly reduces manual cabling and piping installation; management previously mentioned compute tray assembly time could be compressed from about 2 hours to 5 minutes. The significance behind this is that Nvidia is upgrading AI chips into a replicable, scalable "AI factory system."
Jefferies expects Rubin/R200 to account for about 12% of Nvidia's GPU revenue in fiscal Q3 2027, rising to over 40% in Q4, and becoming the dominant revenue source in fiscal Q1 2028. If this pace materializes, the market's valuation logic will shift from "how long can the Blackwell cycle last" to "can Rubin open larger-scale growth."
Circular Financing: The Most Controversial Gray Area
The most likely market focus in this earnings report is the increasingly complex financing arrangements between Nvidia and its hyperscale customers.
According to Jefferies, Nvidia has an arrangement with SB Energy, under which the latter will build and operate the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Ohio, providing it to OpenAI under a 20-year lease, with Nvidia as the exclusive compute supplier. Nvidia will provide credit support for the first 4.25GW of IT capacity and hold options on the remaining 3.75GW, while investing $1.5 billion in SB Energy. Nvidia stated that each generation of system deployment at the site corresponds to about 1.5 million GPUs, generating $150 billion to $200 billion in revenue; OpenAI's existing and planned commitments total about 12GW, expandable to 16GW, corresponding to about $600 billion in Nvidia compute purchases by 2030.
However, Morgan Stanley data shows that the five major hyperscalers, together with Nvidia and Broadcom, have committed over $3.1 trillion through guarantees, leases, and other financial support to drive AI infrastructure spending by other enterprises. This "vendor circular financing" model has become a key issue for institutions like Goldman Sachs: how much of this demand is customer organic capex, and how much needs to be driven by Nvidia through credit support or investment?
Morgan Stanley believes financing, market share, and gross margin are the three most contentious issues for investors. If management cannot provide clear accounting disclosures on contingent obligations and residual value commitments, market concerns about "trading balance sheet for growth" will be hard to dispel.
Gross Margin and Power: Two Hidden Pressure Lines
Gross margin is one of the core supports for Nvidia's valuation premium.
Morgan Stanley expects the company to maintain its fiscal 2027 gross margin guidance of "mid-70s%," with short-term pressure manageable. But medium- to long-term pressure cannot be ignored: costs for HBM, DRAM, advanced packaging, substrates, and front-end wafers are still rising, and new product ramps typically come with yield and supply chain磨合.
Morgan Stanley cautions that consensus expectations for a significant gross margin recovery in the second half of fiscal 2028 may be slightly optimistic. Additionally, Nvidia has notified large customers such as Microsoft, Google, and Oracle that server prices with Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell chips will rise by more than 15% early next year, with rising HBM memory costs being the main driver.
Power supply is also becoming an unignorable constraint.
Jefferies points out that the gap between chip demand expectations and grid supply capacity is widening. Large cloud providers are increasingly partnering with utilities to build dedicated gas-fired power plants, while frontier AI labs are adopting "behind-the-meter" power solutions to bridge the time gap between grid connection and compute deployment. Gas turbines, backup power, and fuel cells are all being advanced, but equipment delivery cycles, grid connection approvals, and local regulations will affect data center construction progress. This means the pace of converting orders into revenue will become less linear.
Competitive Landscape: Structural Risks to Market Share
Beyond the macro narrative, Nvidia's roughly 90% share of the AI accelerator market is facing multi-pronged attacks. Cloud giants like Google and Meta are accelerating their in-house AI chip efforts; reportedly, OpenAI and Broadcom's jointly developed "Jalapeño" inference chip has surpassed Nvidia Blackwell in some benchmarks; emerging chip companies like Cerebras Systems have gone public this year and are also vying for market share.
Bespoke Investment Group notes that Nvidia's stock performance has clearly decoupled from the semiconductor sector, "over the past few months, semiconductor stocks have repeatedly moved inversely to Nvidia." The PHLX Semiconductor Index has been sluggish since its late-June high, and Nvidia's earlier seven-day losing streak was the longest since the current bull market began in October 2022.
These structural changes in the competitive landscape may become risk variables that transcend single-quarter earnings and have a more profound impact on Nvidia's long-term earnings trajectory. Management's comments on the competitive situation will be the part investors least want to miss on the earnings call.
