In December 2013, software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer (also known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto) created Dogecoin (DOGE), an open-source peer-to-peer digital currency. Billy Markus designed Dogecoin’s protocol based on the existing cryptocurrencies Luckycoin and Litecoin, which use scrypt technology in their proof-of-work algorithm. Dogecoin runs on its own independent blockchain.

The rapid ascent to fame, cultural impact, and celebrity endorsements of Dogecoin (including Elon Musk) have led many to draw comparisons to Bitcoin. The fact that Bitcoin has a limit of 21 million coins and Dogecoin has no such restriction is one key distinction between the two.
Dogecoin uses a scrypt-based proof-of-work consensus mechanism, which is more memory-intensive and less energy-intensive than SHA-256, making mining more accessible to GPU users and lowering ASIC dominance. Blocks are targeted about once a minute, with a block reward of Ð10,000 per block. With blocks targeted about once a minute, that works out to roughly 5.2 billion new DOGE per year. Issuance continues under these rules without a final supply cap, and because the yearly addition is broadly steady, the inflation rate declines over time as a percentage of supply. Since 2014, Dogecoin and Litecoin have been merged mined, allowing miners to mine both coins in the same process, sharing hash power and improving network security.
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is another “memecoin” that takes inspiration from the Doge meme, and it’s often compared to Dogecoin. While SHIB and Dogecoin share many features, there is one major difference: SHIB is an ERC20 token that operates on Ethereum rather than its own blockchain. In contrast, DOGE is a coin that operates on its own blockchain.
