Application Programming Interface (API) is a software application that establishes a connection of coded algorithms with that of a broker’s platform. It basically links an investor or trader’s front-end system with a broker’s back end system. Trading Broker API builds custom trading applications.

What is an API & how does it work?

The term API is an acronym, and it stands for “AApplication Programming Interface.” Think of an API like a menu in a restaurant. The menu provides a list of dishes you can order, along with a description of each dish. When you specify what menu items you want, the restaurant’s kitchen does the work and provides you with some finished dishes.

What is a broker & how does it work?

A broker is essentially a middleman. Brokers match buyers with sellers, complete the transaction between the two parties, and pocket a fee for their service. If you use an online brokerage to buy stock, there's no human standing between you and the transaction. The brokerage software makes the match.

What are the different types of API?

The platform offers 3 types of API by features: TWS API, Client Portal Web API, and FIX CTCI, of which The Trader Workstation (TWS) API is the most popular. TWS API is simple but powerful, using which you can build your own trading application or connect your front-end applications.
