Banca Sella Secures Italy’s First MiCA Crypto License in Watershed Moment for EU Banking Sector
Banca Sella has made history as Italy's first bank to receive formal authorization under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The €50 billion asset manager cleared its 40-day regulatory notification period with the Bank of Italy, positioning itself to launch phased crypto services for its 3.1 million customers later this year.
The license unlocks custody, transfer, and purchase capabilities for digital assets—a strategic move timed with Europe's 2026 regulatory horizon. Through subsidiary Hype, the bank has already piloted retail crypto access. Now, corporate infrastructure takes priority, with Chainalysis providing blockchain intelligence for compliance.
This milestone signals how traditional finance is embracing crypto not as a speculative asset, but as core banking infrastructure. As MiCA's provisions take full effect, expect more EU banks to follow Sella's lead in bridging fiat and digital asset services.
