What is merging Ropsten?

“Merging Ropsten is a huge testing milestone towards Ethereum's mainnet Merge later this year,” Ethereum Core developer Preston van Loon wrote last month. This process has been in the works for some years though, with multiple delays sending waves of frustration among the community and investors.

What is Ethereum's merge?

Ethereum’s Merge —the blockchain’s much-anticipated transition from its current proof-of-work (PoW) mechanism to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithm—will be one step closer today if the planned trial upgrade on the Ropsten public testnet goes as planned later today.

Will Ropsten run through the merge in Q4 2022?

The Ropsten testnet, which ran through The Merge on June 8, 2022, will be shut down in Q4 2022. Developers who currently use Ropsten as a staging/testing environment should migrate to Goerli or Sepolia. The Rinkeby testnet will not run through The Merge.

Will Ropsten & seoplia merge on a TESTNET?

The complexity of such a change to Ethereum’s code requires multiple tests on various testnets. Ropsten’s merge is the first test of its kind, and its outcome will help to inform developers’ future steps as they proceed toward the real Merge on mainnet. Other testnet merges on Goerli and Seoplia are expected to happen in the coming months.
