The circulating supply consists of 9.6 billion XRD plus network emissions to date, while total supply equals 12 billion XRD plus network emissions to date.

Who created Radix?

Radix was founded by Dan Hughes, who is based in the United Kingdom and discovered Bitcoin in 2012. With a background in developing telecommunications technology, he recognised the potential impact blockchain could have on global finance. After researching Bitcoin for a year, he started eMunie, later renamed Radix, on Bitcointalk in May 2013. For the next five years, Dan focused on solving scalability challenges, inventing and testing multiple consensus architectures including Blocktrees, Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs), Channelled Asynchronous State Trees (CAST), Tempo, and Cerberus. He currently serves as CTO and Head of Engineering, with blockchain involvement dating back to 2011. Piers Ridyard joined as CEO in 2017, when the project was renamed Radix and funding was raised. Andrew Jarrett serves as CEO of Radix Tokens (Jersey) Limited (RTJL). Adam Simmons is the former CSO and CMO of Radix, who previously scaled a consumer video network to over 30 million monthly active users and co-founded an early Web3 venture in 2017. The broader Radix team is composed of passionate, multi-disciplinary contributors, with additional team members featured on the Radix blog.

How does Radix work?

Radix operates as a Layer 1 smart contract platform utilising a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism. In this system, XRD token holders vote on which validator nodes they wish to participate in consensus by delegating tokens to them, a process known as staking. Stakers are incentivised by earning network emission rewards. The top 100 validator nodes with the most delegated stake are selected by the Radix Protocol as its validator set. This limit of 100 validators is expected to be removed as part of the Radix Xi'an release, allowing for an unlimited number of validators. The consensus breakthrough of Cerberus in 2020 created the world's first cross-shard atomically composable consensus protocol, capable of providing unlimited linear scalability. The Radix Engine runs on mainnet, where assets are native objects held in Vaults, moved and used directly. The Scrypto programming language, released in early access in December 2021, brought smart contracts written in Scrypto to mainnet with the Babylon upgrade in September 2023. The Radix Wallet enables human-readable transactions, transaction guarantees, and native assets, making Web3 and DeFi more accessible to everyday users.

What makes Radix unique and valuable?

Radix distinguishes itself through its full-stack integration of wallet, programming language, execution environment, and consensus algorithm into a single optimised platform. The Cerberus consensus protocol provides unlimited linear scalability through cross-shard atomic composability, a significant technical achievement in the blockchain space. Scrypto, the platform's DeFi development language, enables developers to build secure, production-ready dApps much faster than on other platforms. The Radix Engine treats assets as native objects held in Vaults, simplifying asset management and interaction. The Radix Wallet offers human-readable transactions and transaction guarantees, reducing the risk of user error and enhancing confidence in DeFi participation. Radix is described as the only full-stack Layer 1 smart contract platform offering a radically better experience for both users and developers. The project's decade-long research and development effort has resulted in a highly optimised technology stack specifically designed to serve DeFi, positioning it as a platform capable of supporting the next generation of Web3 applications.

What is Radix used for?

XRD serves two primary functions within the Radix ecosystem. First, XRD is fundamental to Radix's Delegated Proof of Stake system, which uses the token to secure the Radix Public Network against Sybil attacks. Token holders delegate XRD to validator nodes to participate in consensus, earning network emission rewards in return. The top 100 validator nodes with the most delegated stake form the validator set. Second, XRD is used to pay transaction fees on the Radix Public Network. Transaction fees primarily serve as a means of preventing spam transactions across the network. According to the Radix Knowledge Base, 50% of the base network fee is burnt, meaning the tokens used to pay the fee are destroyed by the Radix Protocol. As the base currency of the Radix Public Network, XRD can also be used by any dApp within the Radix DeFi ecosystem, for example as collateral in a lending protocol or as an intermediary facilitating exchange between other tokens. Additionally, eXRD is a wrapped token representing XRD on the Ethereum network, issued as a wrapped ERC20 to enable cross-chain functionality.

How Is the Radix ecosystem developing?

The Radix ecosystem has continued to develop since the Babylon mainnet upgrade went live in September 2023, bringing smart contracts written in Scrypto and the Radix Wallet to mainnet. The Radix DeFi ecosystem includes dApps offering innovative new Web3 and DeFi products, with CaviarNine described as a cornerstone DeFi team. Ascent's OVERRIDE is live, featuring five rounds occurring every 48 hours, with a 1000 XRD entry pass and a top-10 prize pool split. The Radix Accountability Council (RAC) has been referenced in blog and community posts, with consultation results published. In February 2024, Radix announced the deployment of 25 million XRD into the Radix DeFi ecosystem. In June 2024, the Radix Ecosystem Fund was established with 250 million XRD, valued at $10 million, to power the next Web3 breakthrough. Projects building on Radix that raise funds receive a reward of up to 10% of the amount they raised paid in XRD tokens, up to a cap of $50,000. Radix is also listed on the Chainlink Ecosystem, and eXRD is available as a wrapped ERC20 on Ethereum. In September 2025, Radix unveiled RadixAI, pioneering autonomous device operations and empowering enterprises with practical AI solutions.

How to mine Radix?

Radix (XRD) cannot be mined through traditional proof-of-work mining. Instead, XRD is earned through staking in the network's Delegated Proof of Stake system. To participate, XRD token holders delegate their tokens to validator nodes, which vote on their behalf in the consensus process. Stakers earn network emission rewards as an incentive for helping secure the network. The Radix Protocol mints 300 million XRD per year over approximately 40 years as network emission, distributed to stakers and validators. The top 100 validator nodes with the most delegated stake are chosen as the validator set, though this limit is expected to be removed with the Radix Xi'an release, allowing for an unlimited number of validators. To stake XRD, users typically need to set up a compatible wallet, select a validator node to delegate to, and manage their delegation. Staking rewards are distributed in XRD and accrue based on the amount staked and the validator's performance. It is important to note that staked tokens may be subject to unbonding periods or other protocol-specific conditions.

How to keep your Radix Coin safe?

Keeping your XRD safe requires following established security best practices for cryptocurrency storage. Use the official Radix Wallet, which is designed to provide human-readable transactions and transaction guarantees, reducing the risk of errors when interacting with dApps. For long-term storage, consider using a hardware wallet that supports XRD to keep your private keys offline and protected from online threats. Always back up your wallet's seed phrase or private keys in a secure, offline location, and never share them with anyone. Be cautious of phishing attempts, fake websites, and unsolicited messages asking for your private keys or seed phrase. Verify official Radix communication channels, including the official website and blog, before acting on any announcements. When staking, ensure you delegate to reputable validator nodes and understand the risks, including potential slashing or unbonding conditions. Keep your wallet software and any related applications up to date to benefit from the latest security patches. As with any cryptocurrency, only invest what you can afford to lose, and stay informed about network developments, including incident reports and security updates published by the Radix team.
