About Solana

Solana is a highly functional open source project that banks on blockchain technology’s permissionless nature to provide decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions. It is an inflationary cryptocurrency with no hard cap on the total number of tokens. While the idea and initial work on the project began in 2017, Solana was officially launched in March 2020 by the Solana Foundation with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Solana protocol is designed to facilitate decentralized app (DApp) creation. It aims to improve scalability by introducing a proof-of-history (PoH) consensus combined with the underlying proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus of the blockchain.

What is Solana (SOL)?

Software developer Anatoly Yakovenko and businessman Raj Gokal established one of the biggest blockchain networks in the cryptocurrency industry in 2020 with the launch of Solana. One of the top ten cryptocurrencies by market cap right now is SOL, which is its cryptocurrency.

The network’s stablecoin relationship with a big credit card processor is just one example of how it has gained widespread notice in the past few years. It has also grown in popularity as a blockchain for memecoin and NFT initiatives.

How Does Solana Work?

The consensus process that Solana uses, Tower BFT, stands for “Byzantine Fault Tolerance,” and it incorporates both the widely used proof of stake approach and its own algorithm. Proof of stake is similar to a lottery in that it uses a random selection of “stakers” to verify each blockchain ledger. “Staking” refers to the voluntary locking of bitcoin into an account that precludes its transfer or sale.

Tower BFT, meanwhile, keeps tabs on every transaction’s specifics using a timestamp tracking mechanism known as proof of history, which generates an immutable record. When used together, the two techniques allow Solana to validate blockchain transactions much more quickly than either proof of stake alone or the more conventional proof of work could.

From a tokenomics perspective, there is no limit to the creation of the SOL cryptocurrency; in contrast, bitcoin has a maximum quantity of 21 million. Additionally, it employs an inflation timetable to plan the amount of additional supply it intends to create in order to compensate stakeholders and other network members. If a new proposal is approved by the Solana community—which includes investors, validators, core and third-party developers, holders of Solana tokens—and others, this schedule can be changed.

To counteract inflation, Solana, like many other blockchains with infinite token supplies, employs a burning mechanism. This process “burns” cryptocurrency units, taking them out of circulation and reducing the total quantity. But whether its present structure burns sufficiently to combat inflation is a matter of contention in the crypto world.

What Makes Solana Unique?

The Solana protocol is intended to serve both small-time users and enterprise customers alike. One of Solana’s main promises to customers is that they will not be surprised by increased fees and taxes. The protocol is designed in such a way as to have low transaction costs while still guaranteeing scalability and fast processing.

Solana has received much praise for its speed and performance, and has even been tipped as a rival that can compare to Ethereum and challenge the dominant smart contract platform. However, the network has been plagued by repeated outages that have impaired its price and aspirations to be the “Visa of crypto.” Furthermore, its ecosystem is accused of favoring venture capital investors with unfair tokenomics.

This has led to a retrace in the price of SOL as of February 2022, and more short-term bearish price action cannot be ruled out. However, in the long run, Solana should appreciate thanks to strong support from exchanges like FTX.

Solana FAQs

What is Proof of History (PoH)? How does Solana achieve high TPS and ultra-low fees?

Proof of History (PoH) is Solana’s core technological innovation. Rather than acting as a consensus mechanism on its own, PoH functions as a cryptographic decentralized clock. Utilizing a Verifiable Delay Function (VDF), PoH generates immutable timestamps for every transaction, allowing validator nodes to confirm transaction sequence without needing constant network-wide communication. Combined with Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus, Gulf Stream (mempool-less forwarding), and Sealevel (parallel smart contract execution engine), Solana achieves tens of thousands of transactions per second (TPS) with sub-second finality while keeping average transaction fees around $0.00025 USD.

Solana vs. Ethereum: What are the main differences between SOL and ETH, and which is a better buy?

The core differences between Solana (SOL) and Ethereum (ETH) centre around network architecture and scaling approaches:

FeatureSolana (SOL)Ethereum (ETH)
ArchitectureMonolithic (Layer 1 scaling, no L2 required)Modular (Layer 2 execution rollup ecosystem)
Speed & FeesUltra-high TPS, micro-cent fees (<$0.001)Lower L1 TPS, significantly higher Gas fees
Developer EcosystemRust / C / C++ (High performance, steep learning curve)Solidity (Largest ecosystem & total value locked)
Asset RoleHigh throughput, high volatility & ecosystem growthDeflationary dynamics, strong 'Digital Gold' settlement value

Your choice depends on your trading strategy: SOL offers exceptional execution speed, strong ecosystem momentum, and capital efficiency, while ETH provides a long-established, lower-beta store of value.

How do Solana's disinflationary model and fee burn mechanism impact SOL supply and price?

SOL operates on a disinflationary tokenomics model. It started with an initial inflation rate of 8%, which decreases by 15% annually until stabilizing at a long-term baseline rate of 1.5%. Newly minted SOL is distributed as staking rewards to validator nodes. To balance this token issuance, 50% of every transaction fee on the Solana network is permanently burned. During periods of heavy network activity—driven by DeFi trading, NFT minting, and meme coin surges—this burn mechanism offsets inflation, potentially creating localized deflationary pressure that provides structural support for SOL's market price.

What are the primary utility cases for the SOL token in the Solana ecosystem (DeFi, NFTs, Web3)?

SOL is the native utility token powering the Solana blockchain, serving four major purposes: 1. Network Gas Fees: Pays for smart contract execution, token transfers, DeFi trades, and NFT minting. 2. Staking & Governance: Token holders can delegate SOL to validators to secure the network, earn annual staking rewards, and participate in governance voting. 3. Collateral & Liquidity: Functions as primary collateral in lending protocols (e.g., Marginfi, Kamino) and as base liquidity in DEX trading pairs. 4. Settlement Medium: Used for decentralized payments via Solana Pay, DePIN projects (e.g., Helium), and Web3 gaming ecosystems.

How do you set Take-Profit and Stop-Loss (TP/SL) orders when trading SOL futures?

Given SOL's price volatility, managing risk with Take-Profit (TP) and Stop-Loss (SL) orders is essential: 1. Stop-Loss (SL): Set your trigger price based on key technical support/resistance levels or a fixed risk threshold (e.g., risking no more than 1%–2% of total capital per trade). 2. Take-Profit (TP): Identify logical exit points using technical swing highs, Fibonacci extensions, or set a partial/batch TP strategy to lock in gains in phases. 3. Trailing Stop: Enable a trailing stop in trending markets to automatically adjust your stop price as SOL moves in your favour, securing profits while protecting against sudden trend reversals.

What key factors drive the price fluctuations and market trends of Solana (SOL)?

SOL's market performance is primarily driven by four catalyst categories: 1. Ecosystem Adoption & TVL: On-chain DEX volume, DeFi Total Value Locked (TVL), and activity across DePIN and consumer Web3 apps directly influence organic demand for SOL. 2. Network Stability & Client Upgrades: Infrastructure upgrades like the Firedancer validator client improve throughput, whereas network congestion events can temporarily affect trader sentiment. 3. Institutional Capital & ETF Expectations: Expanding institutional custody, corporate treasury adoption, and spot ETF developments serve as major long-term growth catalysts. 4. Macro Environment & BTC Correlation: Global monetary policy trends, broader crypto market liquidity, and Bitcoin's macro price direction.

How can you profit when Solana drops? (SOL Short Selling Guide)

When SOL experiences a price correction or encounters heavy resistance, traders can profit from downward price movement by opening a Short position using USDT-margined or Coin-margined perpetual futures on BTCC: 1. Transfer Funds: Move USDT or SOL from your Spot Wallet to your Futures Account. 2. Open a Short Position: Select your preferred leverage, enter your order size, and click 'Sell / Short'. 3. Close for Profit: When SOL falls to your target price, close your position to lock in gains from the price difference. Shorting can also serve as a hedge against downside risk for long-term spot holdings.

Can I trade Solana (SOL) perpetual futures with high leverage?

Yes, BTCC offers flexible leverage options for SOL perpetual contracts (ranging from 1x up to 50x or higher depending on platform risk management rules). While leverage improves capital efficiency, it multiplies both potential gains and losses. Because SOL exhibits significant intraday price swings, high leverage elevates the risk of liquidation from short-term market wicks. Beginners are strongly advised to start with conservative leverage (2x–5x) and always set strict Stop-Loss (SL) orders.

How can I practice trading SOL futures risk-free using a Demo Account?

BTCC provides a free, risk-free Demo Trading feature for all registered users. Simply toggle your trading environment from 'Live' to 'Demo Account' to receive up to $100,000 in virtual USDT/USDC practice funds. You can use these virtual funds to practice opening Long and Short positions on SOL, test leverage thresholds, evaluate TP/SL strategies, and refine your technical trading skills without risking actual capital.
