View ChartStreamr (DATA) is a decentralized real-time data network built to deliver independent, secure, and scalable realtime communications. The project, which began in 2017, is a cryptographically secure, open-source network capable of streaming any live media or real-time data at scale. It is often described as "Bittorrent but for real-time data," and it sits within the DePIN, AI & Big Data, and Distributed Computing categories.
The project consists of two layers. The Streamr App is a mainstream product for secure video meetings and live streaming, positioned as a fully decentralized and end-to-end encrypted alternative to centralized meeting and broadcast platforms. The Streamr Network is the underlying peer-to-peer mesh network and protocol for realtime data, used by the Streamr App and other applications, with an SDK available for building decentralized pub/sub messaging applications.
DATA is an ERC-20 utility token that exists on Ethereum, Polygon POS, Gnosis Chain, and the Binance Smart Chain. Staking rewards and the Streamr Ecosystem currently operate on Polygon POS. The token has a reported maximum supply of 2 billion DATA, with a circulating supply of roughly 1.26 billion to 1.3 billion tokens. The complete DATA tokenomics were released alongside "Streamr 1.0," described as the final milestone in the Streamr roadmap.
The Streamr project was started in 2017 by Henri Pihkala, Nikke Nylund, Risto Karjalainen, and Michael Malka. Henri Pihkala is identified as Co-founder and Chief Scientist, and is also referred to as CEO and Co-founder. He founded Streamr with the goal of making data more available, fair, and valuable for all, and his listed location is Zug, Switzerland. Nikke Nylund, Risto Karjalainen, and Michael Malka are each listed as founders or co-founders.
The official Streamr team page lists the Streamr Team as "1 of 11." One external source, PaymentsJournal, describes the project as founded in 2017 by Henri Pihkala, Nikke Nylund, and Risto Karjalainen, while the official Streamr site lists four founders including Michael Malka. The team has published a range of project-related technical and academic papers, from the original whitepaper to governance papers.
Streamr technology is a core service layer that implements a vendor-neutral, real-time publish/subscribe protocol for data transmission. The Streamr Network is an incentive-driven peer-to-peer network for messaging in the decentralized data pipeline. Even with roughly 500 nodes today, the architecture is designed to make new classes of applications possible. The Streamr protocol is open source, and an SDK is available for building applications that use decentralized pub/sub messaging.
The technology stack consists of five layers. The Streamr Editor is a usability layer and toolkit for rapid development of decentralized, data-driven apps. The Streamr Engine is a high-performance event processing analytics engine that executes off-chain in a decentralized manner. The Streamr Data Market is a network of shared data streams that anyone can contribute to and subscribe to. The Streamr Network is the data transport layer offering an incentive-driven peer-to-peer network for messaging. Streamr Smart Contracts allow nodes to reach consensus, hold stream metadata, handle permissioning and integrity checking, and facilitate secure token transfers.
The Streamr App is a static web application that runs in the browser. There is no server component to distribute video content, because distribution happens in P2P fashion over the underlying Streamr Network, and the app is fully decentralized and end-to-end encrypted.
Streamr addresses a specific problem: most organizations and individuals depend on big tech centralized platforms for internal meetings and public broadcasts. Such centralization and dependence, particularly on tech giants based in the US, creates a risk of personal and business secrets getting compromised, especially in the age of AI. The Streamr App offers a more private and more secure alternative.
In the broader data economy, access to real-time data is of vital importance for tech companies looking to establish dominance in their field. Data is generated from sources including sensors and connected devices in manufacturing, the service sector, and supply chains. At the same time, decentralized applications increasingly need to rely on distributed data sources from the outside world to fine-tune smart contracts and enable more powerful applications. Streamr's solution is a market for the exchange of real-time data, where anyone can publish events to data streams, subscribe to streams, and use the data in decentralized apps. This real-time data is tokenized and traded by users and machines through Streamr's decentralized P2P network.
Streamr is one of the few networks built for decentralized real-time data flow, and it is positioned as a DePIN play. It is often compared to IOTA, a cryptocurrency technology that facilitates transactions between IoT devices, with the biggest noted difference being their blockchain approach, as IOTA developed its own DAG network.
The DATA token is the utility token of the Streamr Network, powering decentralized data streaming. It is an ERC-20 token used for three primary purposes. First, it is used for project governance: holding DATA tokens gives voting rights, enabling holders to influence key network and economic decisions, ensuring the network remains robust and decentralized through community participation. Second, it incentivizes network participants, specifically Operator nodes in the Streamr Network. Third, it is used for delegating stake on Streamr nodes, as Node Operators must stake DATA tokens in order to earn from their bandwidth contributions to the network.
The DATA economy works through a defined flow. A Publisher App publishes a stream, and their node relays it to subscribers. A Sponsor wanting better service for the stream deploys and funds a Sponsorship. Streamr nodes watching for sponsorships stake DATA tokens to join the stream, relay the stream for an agreed period, and then claim rewards in DATA tokens from the Sponsorship smart contract. Node operators are limited in the number of streams they can join by the size of their Operator Contract. Delegators pay DATA tokens into the Operator Contract, giving Streamr Nodes the funds to join more streams, and Delegators share in the Node rewards.
DATA also has additional use cases. It functions as a currency used by consumers to compensate data producers and as a tool to incentivize data vendors to grow the community. It also serves as a means for measuring reputation through "karma." Data producers, data consumers, and message brokers can gain karma from DATA transactions, such as when publishing data, consuming data, and running broker nodes. New karma added is equivalent to the amount of DATA exchanged in a transaction, but unlike DATA coins, karma decays and has an expiration date, while the user's DATA balance remains the same.
The Streamr ecosystem includes several products and resources. The Streamr App provides secure video meetings and live streaming as a fully decentralized and end-to-end encrypted alternative to centralized platforms. The Streamr Network is the underlying P2P mesh network and protocol for realtime data. Hub, Data Unions, and Thechat.app are listed as product areas and apps within the Streamr site navigation. The project also maintains documentation, a grants program, an FAQ, an ecosystem section, a roadmap, whitepapers, a team page, design assets, and token migration resources.
Streamr maintains a Dune dashboard to monitor DATA staked, protocol fees, and a comprehensive range of on-chain usage metrics. Metrics tracked include $DATA staked, Streams, Operators, and APY. The team has been progressing in the development of the protocol and has partnered with a number of other projects and companies. Streamr publishes updates about the project, the ecosystem, node running, and other happenings on the Streamr blog.
Governance operates through the Streamr DAO, where DATA token holders can vote on governance proposals called SIPs, or Streamr Improvement Proposals. These proposals govern spending from the token reserve as well as network parameters. The community includes 46.14K holders and roughly 500 nodes.
Streamr is not mined through traditional proof-of-work mining. Instead, the network relies on an incentive-driven peer-to-peer model in which node operators contribute bandwidth and security. Node Operators must stake DATA tokens in order to earn from their bandwidth contributions to the Streamr Network. Operators stake on Sponsorships, committing their nodes to work on the associated stream for the duration of the Sponsorship, and they claim rewards in DATA tokens from the Sponsorship smart contract afterward.
Node operators are limited in the number of streams they can join by the size of their Operator Contract. Delegators can pay DATA tokens into an Operator Contract, which gives Streamr Nodes the funds to join more streams, and Delegators then share in the Node rewards. Operator nodes contribute security and bandwidth to the network by forwarding messages and boosting the connectivity of a data stream. The Streamr Dune dashboard tracks $DATA staked, Streams, Operators, and APY for those participating in the network.
DATA is an ERC-20 token, so it can be stored in wallets that support ERC-20 tokens. Commonly referenced compatible wallets include MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and Ledger. When choosing a wallet, ensure it supports ERC-20 tokens and, if you intend to use DATA on Polygon POS, Gnosis Chain, or Binance Smart Chain, confirm that the wallet supports those networks as well.
Because DATA exists on multiple blockchains, it is important to use the correct contract address for the network you are transacting on and to use official bridges when moving tokens between chains. Bridges are available for Polygon POS, Gnosis Chain, and Binance BSC. Always verify contract addresses against the official Streamr DATA token page before sending funds.
For long-term holdings, a hardware wallet such as Ledger provides an additional layer of security by keeping private keys offline. As with any cryptocurrency, never share your private keys or seed phrase, and be cautious of phishing attempts that impersonate official Streamr channels. The CertiK rating for the project is 3.6 as shown on CoinMarketCap.
