View ChartAurora is an Ethereum-scaling project that operates as a layer-2 solution running on the layer-1 NEAR Protocol. It is designed to help Ethereum users and decentralized applications move easily to the NEAR blockchain. Aurora allows users to upload and interact with Solidity smart contracts on NEAR, and to move assets including ERC-20 tokens between Ethereum, NEAR and Aurora through the Rainbow Bridge. The base token of the Aurora environment is ETH, selected to deliver a familiar experience and tooling for developers. AURORA itself is an ERC-20 governance token used to ensure proper upgrades to the protocol. The maximum supply is fixed at 1,000,000,000 tokens, with a circulating supply of approximately 736.78 million. The project launched its token generation event on Nov. 18, 2021, and is governed by AuroraDAO.
Aurora Labs is led by Dr. Alex Shevchenko, CEO, who holds a Ph.D. in physics and mathematics and has been a blockchain enthusiast since 2015. He was a developer of Bitfury's Exonum and is a strong believer in blockchain scalability solutions. The CTO is Arto Bendiken, a self-taught cypherpunk, entrepreneur and prolific open-source author with more than 20 years of professional software engineering experience, including work with the European Space Agency and the U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. The project is governed by AuroraDAO, which includes representatives from different ecosystems and sectors of the blockchain industry.
Aurora functions as an Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible environment on the NEAR blockchain. It enables developers to deploy and interact with Solidity smart contracts on NEAR while benefiting from the underlying network's performance. The Rainbow Bridge is the core interoperability component, allowing users to transfer assets, including ERC-20 tokens, between Ethereum, NEAR and Aurora. The base token used within the Aurora environment is ETH, which provides a familiar experience for Ethereum users and developers. The AURORA token serves as a governance instrument, giving holders a role in ensuring proper upgrades to the protocol through AuroraDAO. Consensus on the Aurora chain is described as applying DPOS combined with BFT mechanisms, supporting high-speed operation for use cases such as games, big data, AI and IoT.
Aurora's primary distinction is its position as an Ethereum-scaling layer-2 that runs on the NEAR Protocol, combining Ethereum compatibility with NEAR's performance characteristics. By allowing Solidity contracts to run on NEAR and enabling asset movement through the Rainbow Bridge, Aurora offers a bridge between two major ecosystems. The choice of ETH as the base token reduces friction for Ethereum users and developers, while AURORA provides a governance layer for protocol upgrades. AuroraDAO's multi-sector representation supports decentralized decision-making. The project has also introduced Aurora Cloud, a platform designed to assist businesses with their web3 initiatives, including a white-labeled wallet solution, extending its value proposition beyond pure infrastructure.
AURORA is a governance token whose primary purpose is to ensure proper upgrades to the Aurora protocol. Holders participate in governance through AuroraDAO, which includes representatives from various ecosystems and sectors of the blockchain industry. Beyond governance, the broader Aurora environment uses ETH as its base token for transactions and interactions within the network. The ecosystem also supports asset transfers via the Rainbow Bridge, enabling ERC-20 tokens and other assets to move between Ethereum, NEAR and Aurora. A portion of the token allocation supports Aurora Labs incentives and delegators of the Aurora validator on NEAR, tying the token to network participation and long-term development.
The Aurora ecosystem is built around several core components. The Rainbow Bridge enables asset movement between Ethereum, NEAR and Aurora. AuroraDAO provides governance with cross-ecosystem representation. An Aurora validator on NEAR distributes rewards to delegators as part of a 3% allocation. Aurora Cloud, introduced in a vision paper published on Nov. 22, 2023, is a comprehensive platform designed to assist businesses in their web3 initiatives, including a white-labeled wallet solution. Token allocation also reserves 48% of supply on the AuroraDAO balance for future projects and 20% for the community treasury, indicating planned long-term ecosystem development. The project has raised a total of $17.77 million across six completed rounds.
AURORA is not mined through proof-of-work. It is an ERC-20 governance token issued on Ethereum, with a fixed maximum supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens. The Aurora chain itself is described as applying DPOS combined with BFT consensus mechanisms. Token distribution is governed by an unlocking scheme rather than mining: locked tokens follow a 2-year unlocking schedule with linear unlocks every 3 months and a 6-month cliff starting from the token launch date, with 25% unlocked after 6 months and an additional 12.5% after 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 months. Users who wish to support the network can participate as delegators to the Aurora validator on NEAR, which receives a 3% allocation distributed linearly and evenly to delegators.
Because AURORA is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, it can be stored in wallets that support the ERC-20 standard. Users should verify the official contract address before interacting with any token and rely on official documentation for guidance. For long-term storage, hardware wallets are generally recommended for keeping private keys offline. Users should never share private keys or seed phrases and should be cautious of phishing sites and fake tokens using similar names. Since assets can also move across Ethereum, NEAR and Aurora via the Rainbow Bridge, users should carefully confirm bridge destinations and network selections before transferring. Keeping software updated and using trusted, official interfaces reduces exposure to common security risks.
