About Wanchain

What is Wanchain (WAN)?

Wanchain (WAN) is a Layer 1 blockchain platform built to solve one of the most persistent problems in the digital asset industry: interoperability between isolated blockchain networks. Described as the "Wide Area Network chain," Wanchain positions itself as a decentralised blockchain interoperability solution whose mission is to drive blockchain adoption by building fully decentralised bridges that connect the world's many siloed networks. The project launched in 2018 and is EVM compatible, functioning as a fork of the Ethereum network, which allows developers to build cross-chain Solidity-based applications with relative ease.

The platform's core infrastructure includes WanBridge, a decentralised, direct, non-custodial value-transfer bridge; XFlows, a canonical cross-chain swap platform supporting native-to-native asset swaps; XPort, a cross-chain data transfer protocol; and XStake, a web-based staking platform. Cross-chain security is provided through a combination of Secure Multiparty Computation (sMPC) and a Threshold Signature Scheme (TSS), with bridge nodes rotated and re-elected monthly. Wanchain's native coin, WAN, has a maximum supply of 210,000,000 tokens, with a circulating supply of approximately 199.05M WAN, representing roughly 94.79% of max supply.

Who created Wanchain?

Wanchain was founded by Jack Lu, a blockchain entrepreneur and technical expert who graduated from Peking University and Ohio State University. Before founding Wanchain, Jack Lu co-founded Factom in 2014, a blockchain platform focused on storing sensitive information on blockchain, and also founded Wanglu Tech, a distributed ledger protocol centered on digital asset and data deposit certificates. Under his leadership, Wanchain established headquarters in Beijing, China, and Austin, Texas.

On Feb. 27, 2024, Wanchain appointed Temujin Louie as its new CEO. Temujin succeeded Jack Lu, the founder and outgoing CEO, who transitioned to an active advisory role within the company. Dr. Weijia Zhang serves as Wanchain's VP on Engineering and co-authored the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance's Distributed Ledger Technology Interoperability Specification. The project maintains a global presence with teams in Beijing, Austin, Kuala Lumpur, and Madrid.

How does Wanchain work?

Wanchain operates on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism called Galaxy Consensus, which is designed to be faster, more transparent, and more scalable than proof-of-work. Rather than mining to create new blocks, the network uses a random selection of individuals who make their cryptocurrency available to the platform through staking validators. These selected validators validate new blocks and receive rewards. Validators are selected through a fair process and rotated every month, ensuring that all qualified participants have an opportunity to validate blocks and earn rewards. There are three categories of validation nodes on the platform, each with a specific function.

At the cross-chain level, Wanchain bridge nodes collectively use Secure Multiparty Computation (sMPC) and Shamir's Secret Sharing cryptography to secure cross-chain assets. The bridge architecture supports several bridge types, including Token Bridges that use a lock-mint-burn-unlock mechanism, Canonical Asset Bridges that enable native-to-native cross-chain transformations, and NFT Bridges that transfer NFT IDs and attributes alongside the asset itself. Wanchain's direct bridges do not rely on any centralised hub or relay chain, and bridge nodes are permissionless, decentralised, and non-custodial.

What makes Wanchain unique and valuable?

Wanchain's primary differentiator is its fully decentralised approach to cross-chain interoperability. Unlike bridge solutions that depend on centralised intermediaries or relay chains, Wanchain's direct bridges connect blockchains without a centralised hub. The platform is not limited to public chains; transactions can also occur between private chains, broadening its applicability to enterprise and consortium use cases. Having integrated Bitcoin, Ethereum, and EOS, Wanchain aims to pave the way for plug-and-play connectivity between public, private, and consortium blockchains.

Another distinguishing feature is the network's incentive structure. Anyone can deploy a Wanchain bridge node, and nodes are rotated and re-elected on a monthly basis, promoting fair participation. Node operators and delegators are rewarded with WAN coins for securing the network and bridges. Wanchain is also fully EVM compatible, making it accessible for developers to build cross-chain applications. The project's XPort protocol is designed to be compliant with the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance's Distributed Ledger Technology Interoperability Specification, further reinforcing its enterprise-ready positioning.

What is Wanchain used for?

WAN is the native token of the Wanchain Layer 1 blockchain and serves multiple functions within the ecosystem. WAN coins can be staked to deploy Wanchain validators, and the token is used to reward node operators and delegators for securing the network and bridges. Through XStake, users can delegate WAN to Wanchain PoS Validator Nodes participating in Galaxy Consensus, helping to secure the Layer 1 blockchain while earning rewards. According to the Wanchain homepage, staking xWAN earns BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC.

Beyond staking, WAN is integral to the platform's cross-chain infrastructure. The token supports the broader interoperability mission, enabling value transfer and network security across connected chains. The ecosystem connects a wide range of assets and networks, including ADA, BTC, ETH, LINK, XRP, TRX, AVAX, EOS, LTC, MATIC, DOGE, USDT, USDC, DOT, BNB, and many others, allowing users to move value across previously siloed blockchain environments.

How Is the Wanchain ecosystem developing?

The Wanchain ecosystem is built around a suite of interoperable products and developer resources. WanBridge serves as the decentralised value-transfer bridge, while XFlows enables cross-chain native-to-native asset swaps, seamlessly selecting between multiple route types to ensure users benefit from the best possible rates. XPort handles arbitrary data transfer between blockchains through a robust off-chain relayer and on-chain Cross-Chain Gateways. XStake provides web-based staking opportunities for users to participate in network security.

Developer resources include the Wanchain Github, WanDevs Github, developer documents, PoS status dashboards, iWan users, Dapps, Wanscan, WanWallet, and both mainnet and testnet faucets. The platform tracks network statistics such as block height, total transactions, uninterrupted uptime, connected networks, crosschain volume, and burned WAN. Community engagement is supported through Twitter, Medium, Telegram, Github, Youtube, and the CoinMarketCap community platform.

How to mine Wanchain?

Wanchain does not use traditional mining. Instead, the network operates on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, meaning new blocks are validated rather than mined. Participants can acquire WAN and stake it to become validators or delegate their tokens to existing validators. Validators are selected through a fair selection process and rotated every month, allowing qualified participants to share in validating blocks and receiving rewards.

To participate, users can utilize XStake, Wanchain's web-based staking platform, which houses a variety of infrastructure-supporting staking opportunities. By delegating WAN to Wanchain PoS Validator Nodes participating in Galaxy Consensus, users help secure the Wanchain Layer 1 blockchain. Node operators and delegators are rewarded for securing the network and bridges with WAN coins. Additionally, staking xWAN earns BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC. There are three categories of validation nodes on the platform, each with a specific function.

How to keep your Wanchain Coin safe?

Securing WAN tokens begins with choosing a reputable wallet. Wanchain provides WanWallet as an official wallet option, and users should ensure they download it from official sources. Because Wanchain is EVM compatible, WAN may also be supported by a range of compatible wallets. Always verify wallet authenticity before entering private keys or seed phrases, and never share these credentials with anyone.

For long-term storage, hardware wallets offer an additional layer of protection by keeping private keys offline. When interacting with bridges or staking platforms, users should confirm they are using official Wanchain interfaces. Since bridge nodes are permissionless and rotated monthly, it is important to understand that cross-chain transactions rely on decentralised security assumptions. Keeping software updated, using strong unique passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication where available are practical steps to protect holdings.
