About Chainlink

What is Chainlink?

Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network and blockchain abstraction layer that communicates off-chain data to blockchains. Its oracles securely enable computations both on and off the blockchain, supporting hybrid smart contracts and cross-chain interoperability.

The Chainlink blockchain is hosted on the Ethereum platform, which uses a proof-of-stake operating protocol. Additionally, Chainlink is an open-source blockchain project, enabling anyone to view and contribute to the project's code.

History of Chainlink

Chainlink was proposed in 2017 and launched in 2019 by Steve Ellis, Ari Juels, and Sergey Nazarov to address an issue known as 'the blockchain oracle problem'. Oracles are network entities that handle traffic between two non-compatible systems. The blockchain oracle problem affects all blockchains because they are essentially closed systems that cannot push or pull data to or from outside systems.

Blockchain protocols cannot permit this ability as it would compromise the security that blockchains are renowned for. Additionally, oracles enable data from external sources to trigger smart contracts, which is not something that blockchains are designed to do.

As of May 2025, Chainlink had grown to more than 2,300 projects built using it as a source.

It has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, of which over 650 million have been issued.

Chainlink vs. Ethereum

In some ways, the Chainlink network complements the Ethereum network and other blockchains. It can facilitate secure communication between Ethereum projects and various off-chain data sources. As LINK is built on the Ethereum platform, it is compliant with its protocols.

Ethereum tokens can be used for purchases, to facilitate smart contracts, and to pay validators for operating the Ethereum network. In contrast, Chainlink tokens have only one use: to pay node operators in the Chainlink network.

Chainlink FAQs

What is Chainlink (LINK)? How does the decentralized oracle network solve the blockchain data problem?

Chainlink (LINK) is the leading decentralized oracle network project, founded in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis. Blockchains are inherently isolated networks that cannot directly access off-chain data (such as external APIs, stock prices, or weather feeds)—a fundamental limitation known as the "Oracle Problem." Chainlink solves this by using a decentralized network of node operators to securely retrieve, verify, and deliver real-time external data to smart contracts on the blockchain, serving as reliable Data Feeds for DeFi, insurance, and Real-World Asset (RWA) protocols.

What is the CCIP protocol? How does Chainlink drive cross-chain interoperability and Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenization?

The Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) is an open-source, universal cross-chain messaging standard developed by Chainlink. CCIP enables seamless transfer of data and tokens across disparate blockchain networks (such as Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche), eliminating ecosystem fragmentation. In the Real-World Asset (RWA) space, major financial institutions (including Swift, ANZ, and Euroclear) leverage Chainlink CCIP and oracle infrastructure to bridge tokenized government bonds and institutional funds onto Web3, building a secure, compliant bridge between Traditional Finance (TradFi) and decentralized networks.

How does Chainlink Staking (LINK Staking 2.0) work? How does it impact LINK circulating supply and price?

Chainlink Staking is a core mechanism of the platform's Economics 2.0 initiative. LINK token holders and node operators can lock up their LINK tokens in staking contracts to back oracle performance guarantees and earn staking rewards. If a node operator delivers inaccurate data, their staked LINK is subject to slashing penalties. By locking a substantial amount of LINK away from liquid exchange markets, staking reduces sell pressure on spot markets while enhancing token utility and backing long-term economic security.

Chainlink (LINK) vs. Pyth Network: What are the technical differences and market advantages between these top oracle leaders?

Chainlink and Pyth Network are the two premier oracle protocols in crypto, each using distinct architectural approaches and serving different use cases. Here is a detailed comparison:

How should traders set Take-Profit and Stop-Loss (TP/SL) orders on LINK futures to manage volatility?

Proper Take-Profit (TP) and Stop-Loss (SL) risk management is critical when trading LINK perpetual futures: 1. Stop-Loss (SL): Place SL orders slightly below key technical support levels for Long positions or above resistance zones for Short positions. Limit single-trade exposure to 1%–2% of total account equity. 2. Take-Profit (TP): Target key Fibonacci expansion levels or previous market swing highs/lows, using scaled/partial TP orders (Batch TP) to lock in profits. 3. Trailing Stop: During strong breakout momentum, activating a Trailing Stop automatically trails your stop level upward as the trade moves into profit, securing gains while riding trend extensions.

What is the current live price, market cap, and 24-hour trading volume of Chainlink (LINK)?

According to the latest market data, Chainlink (LINK) is currently trading at C$20.16 (with equivalent CAD market valuation), with a total market capitalization of C$15.08B and a 24-hour trading volume around C$301.62M. LINK's current circulating supply stands at 748.1M, out of a maximum supply of 1B. You can monitor live candlestick charts, order book depth, and real-time market liquidity for LINK directly on the BTCC trading platform.

Which fundamental drivers (DeFi TVL, institutional partnerships, and Bitcoin market trends) impact LINK's price?

LINK's token price is primarily driven by 4 core fundamental factors: 1. Global DeFi TVL Expansion: Higher Total Value Locked (TVL) across major DeFi protocols (e.g., Aave, Compound) directly increases demand for Chainlink's data feeds. 2. TradFi & RWA Partnerships: Major adoption announcements involving Swift, Tier-1 global banks, or public Layer-1 integrations act as strong bullish catalysts. 3. Bitcoin (BTC) Macro Trend: As a top-tier altcoin, LINK's medium-to-long-term price direction shows high correlation with overall BTC market liquidity. 4. LINK Staking Pool Caps: Expanding staking pool limits locks up circulating supply, significantly dampening liquid market sell pressure.

What are the All-Time High (ATH) and All-Time Low (ATL) prices for Chainlink (LINK)?

Historical market data shows that Chainlink (LINK) reached its All-Time High (ATH) of C$75.38 on 2021-05-10 00:10, while its All-Time Low (ATL) was recorded at C$0.18 on 2017-09-23 16:05. As a foundational Web3 infrastructure asset, LINK has historically generated substantial trading volume and retail/institutional interest during market bull cycles.

How do you analyze Chainlink (LINK) candlestick (K-line) charts for futures trading?

To analyze LINK futures charts effectively, incorporate the following technical analysis techniques: 1. Trendlines & Key Zones: Mark major swing highs and swing lows on 4-hour (4H) and daily (1D) timeframes to identify primary support and resistance levels. 2. Technical Indicators: Use Exponential Moving Averages (EMA 20/50/200) to confirm macro trends, alongside RSI and MACD to spot overbought/oversold conditions and momentum divergences. 3. Volume & Depth Analysis: Valid breakouts require noticeable volume expansion. Check the BTCC order book depth to locate significant buy/sell walls and avoid false breakouts (fakeouts).

How can you profit when the price of Chainlink falls? (A guide to shorting LINK)

When LINK experiences a top reversal or enters a bear market trend, you can open Short positions via USDT-margined perpetual futures on BTCC to profit from falling prices: 1. Transfer Funds: Transfer USDT from your Spot Account to your Futures Account. 2. Open a Short Position: Select the LINK/USDT trading pair, choose an appropriate leverage multiplier, enter your order size, and click "Sell / Short". 3. Close & Realize Profits: Once LINK's price declines to your target level, close your position to lock in gains from the price spread. Shorting can also serve as a hedging strategy to offset downside portfolio risk on your spot LINK holdings.

Can you trade Chainlink (LINK) perpetual contracts with high leverage?

Yes, BTCC offers flexible leverage options (such as 20x, 50x, or higher depending on account risk tier settings) for LINK perpetual futures trading. Leverage enhances capital efficiency by allowing you to control larger position sizes with less margin, but it magnifies both potential profits and losses equally. Given crypto market volatility, trading with high leverage increases liquidation risk. Beginners are strongly advised to start with conservative leverage (2x to 5x) and always enforce strict Stop-Loss orders.

How do you practice trading Chainlink (LINK) futures using a free demo account?

BTCC provides a completely free, risk-free Demo Trading environment for all registered users. Simply switch your account mode to "Demo Account" to receive up to 100,000 USDT/USDC in paper trading funds. This allows you to practice opening Long and Short positions on LINK under live market conditions, test leverage settings, and refine your TP/SL strategy without putting real capital at risk.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to buy and trade Chainlink (LINK)?

To start trading Chainlink (LINK), follow these 4 simple steps: 1. Sign Up & Verify: Create an account on the official BTCC website or mobile app and complete identity verification (KYC). 2. Deposit Funds: Deposit capital via Interac e-Transfer, bank wire transfer, credit/debit card, or crypto transfer from an external wallet. 3.
