About Origin Dollar

What is Origin Dollar (OUSD)?

Origin Dollar (OUSD) is a decentralized, yield-bearing stablecoin pegged to the US dollar that automatically earns interest for holders directly in their wallets. It generates yield through integrated DeFi strategies, eliminating the need for users to manually stake or lend their assets. OUSD is fully backed by USDC, with collateral deployed into onchain strategies on Morpho and Curve. The protocol is governed by the Origin DeFi DAO; OGV holders can stake OGV to receive fees and governance power, and OGN stakers earn protocol fees and voting power. Users can mint and redeem OUSD directly on the Origin Protocol platform, with the process designed to maintain the peg through arbitrage opportunities.

Who created Origin Dollar (OUSD)?

OUSD launched in 2020 (inception date 23 September 2020) as Origin's first yield-bearing token and the first liquid, yield-bearing stablecoin in DeFi. Origin Dollar was created by Origin Protocol, a team focused on building decentralized commerce and finance platforms. The project was co-founded by Josh Fraser and Matthew Liu. The development and ongoing management of the OUSD ecosystem are overseen by Origin DeFi, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) governed by holders of its native governance token, OGV. This structure ensures that key decisions regarding protocol upgrades, treasury management, and yield strategies are made collectively by the community.

How does Origin Dollar (OUSD) work?

OUSD operates on a simple yet powerful principle: it automatically earns yield for holders. When you hold OUSD in a supported wallet (like MetaMask), the balance increases over time without any required action. This is achieved through a behind-the-scenes process:

  1. Collateralization: OUSD is fully backed by USDC.
  2. Yield Generation: These stablecoins are deployed into Morpho lending markets on Ethereum Mainnet, Base and HyperLiquid, and into protocol-owned liquidity on the Curve OUSD/USDC pool. The OUSD Morpho Vault is co-curated by Origin and Yearn; Origin sets risk parameters such as market eligibility criteria and allocation ceilings, while Yearn manages day-to-day allocations within those bounds.
  3. Rebasing Mechanism: The interest earned from these strategies is used to mint new OUSD tokens. These new tokens are then distributed proportionally to all OUSD holders through a daily rebase. Your wallet balance updates to reflect your share of the earned yield. A 20% performance fee on yield is charged and distributed to OGN stakers, and redemptions through the dapp incur a 0.25% exit fee that is returned to OUSD holders as extra yield.
  4. Minting & Redemption: Users can mint new OUSD by depositing supported stablecoins into the protocol's smart contract. Users can redeem OUSD for its underlying collateral; however, because capital is deployed in peer-to-peer Morpho lending markets, withdrawal availability depends on market utilization — when a market reaches 100% utilization, OUSD cannot withdraw until borrowers repay or new suppliers enter. This mint/redeem mechanism, along with arbitrage, helps maintain OUSD's peg to the US dollar.

OUSD was exploited in a flash loan re-entrancy attack shortly after launch, losing nearly $7 million; the project subsequently fully compensated affected users and relaunched. The codebase has been audited 12+ times.

What makes Origin Dollar (OUSD) unique and valuable

OUSD's primary value proposition is its passive yield generation. Unlike traditional stablecoins or even staked assets, OUSD holders earn interest simply by holding the token in their wallet. This removes significant complexity and manual effort from the yield-farming process. Key unique features include:

  • Automatic Compounding: Yield is earned and compounded automatically within the token itself.
  • Capital Efficiency: There is no need to lock tokens or move them to separate staking contracts; yield accrues directly in the holding wallet.
  • Decentralized Governance: The protocol's strategies and parameters are managed by OGV token holders, aligning incentives with the community.
  • Transparent Backing: The protocol's reserves are verifiable on-chain, providing transparency about its collateralization.
  • Yield bonus from rebasing: smart contracts must opt in to earn yield; contracts that do not opt in forfeit their rewards to normal holders, and the AMO lets the protocol earn up to 2x the rewards on the same capital.

The protocol typically allocates less than 20% of USDC collateral to the Curve OUSD/USDC pool, which provides instant exit liquidity for holders who prefer to swap rather than redeem and earns LP incentive rewards that compound into OUSD yield.

What is Origin Dollar (OUSD) used for?

OUSD serves multiple purposes within the DeFi ecosystem:

  • A Yield-Bearing Store of Value: It is a dollar-pegged asset whose holder balance increases through daily rebasing as yield accrues, rather than the price rising above $1, ideal for holding as a savings instrument within crypto.
  • Providing Liquidity: OUSD can be supplied to the Curve OUSD/USDC pool to earn LP incentive rewards on top of its base yield.
  • Medium of Exchange: While earning yield, it can still be used for payments, transfers, and as a base trading pair, though its primary use case is capital preservation with growth.

How to buy OUSD Coin?

OUSD can be acquired on major exchanges and decentralized exchanges, or minted directly through the Origin Protocol dapp by depositing supported stablecoins.

Risk disclosure: The value of crypto assets can fluctuate significantly, and regulatory policy may change. Smart contract and protocol risks remain, including the liquidity risk described above. This article is for reference only and does not constitute investment advice.
