View ChartThis article covers Cryptex Finance (CTX), the Ethereum-based DeFi index protocol. It is unrelated to the Hong Kong-based company that released a Bitcoin debit card in 2014, or to the Russian exchange that uses the same name.
Cryptex Finance is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that issues an on-chain market capitalization-weighted index token called TCAP, allowing users to gain diversified exposure to the entire crypto market through a single asset.
CTX is the governance token of the Cryptex Finance protocol, giving holders voting rights on key protocol parameters and treasury management.
The protocol's flagship product, TCAP (Total Crypto Market Cap), is an ERC-20 token that tracks the total market capitalization of the cryptocurrency market.
CTX is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum; it does not run its own consensus mechanism — security and finality are inherited from Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus.
The platform is categorized under DeFi and derivative indices, offering a unique way to invest in the broader market without holding individual coins.
CTX tokens can be staked to earn a share of protocol fees and participate in governance decisions.
Cryptex Finance is a DeFi protocol that creates synthetic, on-chain index tokens, with TCAP being its first and primary product. The protocol aims to simplify crypto investing by providing a single token that represents the entire market.

Total supply and max supply are both 10,000,000 CTX. CTX launched in 2021, with Yahoo Finance listing a start date of 2021-06-09.
Cryptex Finance was co-founded by Joe Sticco and Thomas Matzner. The project was launched in 2021 with the goal of creating a transparent and decentralized way to track the entire crypto market. Co-founder Thomas Matzner previously led business planning at startups and publicly traded companies for more than 10 years in the consumer goods sector. Governance is on-chain: CTX holders can vote on proposals that affect the protocol, and the official site lists an on-chain governance and staking section. This community-driven approach ensures that the platform evolves according to the needs of its users. Cryptex came out of a phone call between Joe Sticco and Thomas Matzner between 2018 and 2019, and the founders launched the TCAP token in 2021.
Cryptex Finance operates by minting TCAP tokens that are backed by a basket of underlying cryptocurrencies held in a smart contract. When a user mints TCAP, they deposit a set of collateral assets (like ETH, USDC, or WBTC) into the protocol's vault. TCAP is a synthetic asset backed by deposits of cryptocurrencies such as ETH, USDC or WBTC held in smart contracts; it is designed to track the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. The TCAP token price is designed to track the total crypto market cap, providing diversified exposure. To redeem TCAP for the underlying collateral, users burn their TCAP tokens. The CTX token is the governance token of the protocol, allowing holders to vote on key parameters such as collateral ratios, fee structures, and the addition of new collateral types. Staking CTX also allows users to earn a portion of the fees generated by the protocol.
Cryptex Finance stands out because it offers a single, on-chain token that represents the entire cryptocurrency market, solving the problem of diversification for investors. Unlike traditional index funds, TCAP is fully decentralized and transparent, with all collateral held in smart contracts that can be audited by anyone. This eliminates the need for a centralized custodian. The protocol's value is derived from its ability to provide a simple, low-cost way to gain broad market exposure without the complexity of managing multiple wallets or tracking dozens of individual coins. The CTX governance token adds another layer of value by giving holders direct control over the protocol's future. Demand for on-chain index products may grow, but CTX and TCAP are subject to sharp price volatility, smart-contract risk and regulatory uncertainty.
Beyond TCAP, Cryptex announced JPEGz for NFT-market exposure, launched Cryptex v2 in June 2023 — a decentralized perpetuals market on Arbitrum — and later introduced Cryptex Pi. The Cryptex Digital Market Cap Index is now live, and an ETF filing (S-1/A, Aug 24, 2026) has been submitted with the SEC.
Every smart contract is independently audited before deployment, with continuous monitoring after launch. The project reports four audits, including one from Cantina.
The primary use of CTX is for governance within the Cryptex Finance ecosystem. CTX holders can propose and vote on changes to the protocol, including adjustments to collateral ratios, fee models, and the addition of new features. Additionally, CTX can be staked to earn a share of the protocol's revenue, which comes from minting and redemption fees on TCAP. This staking mechanism incentivizes long-term holding and active participation in the DAO. Beyond governance and staking, CTX is also traded on various cryptocurrency exchanges, allowing investors to speculate on the future growth of the Cryptex Finance platform. CTX is used to access financial products such as TCAP, staking, and participation in DeFi dapps.
CTX is listed on several major exchanges and decentralized venues; compare fees, liquidity and custody options before choosing where to trade.
