Thursday Breaking News: NFT-Related Searches on Google Skyrockets to All-Time High

Last edited: Nov 26, 2021

Google Trends reveals exploding growth in interest in non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as searches on related terms such as “NFT” and “Buy NFTs” surges to all-time highs. For people who have already purchased NFTs, or people who are interested in buying NFTs as a vehicle of investment, this could be a great sign, as it foreshadows a possibility of a massive retail boom in the trading activities of NFT marketplaces.

NFT searches are particularly dominated by Asian nations, with China, Uganda, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Philippines topping the keyword’s search rankings.

Globally, interest in NFTs have doubled in the past 3 months, with the keyword “NFT” overtaking other keywords that have long dominated search traffic related to cryptocurrency, including “DeFi,” “Ethereum,” and “blockchain.”

As a prime example of this surge in search traffic and rise in public interest in general, according to DappRadar, NFT marketplace OpenSea has seen a huge jump in activity following a few months of gradual decline. The number of users on OpenSea has doubled and the total transaction volume has tripled since the beginning of November.

Of the projects sold on OpenSea, Bored Ape Yacht Club, the top NFT project on the platform, has seen volume of over 15,000 ETH in the last seven days, up 227% week-over-week, while the runner-up in transaction volume, the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, increased 346% in the same time frame.

This expanded interest in OpenSea and the Ape Yacht Club collections could be partially explained by the fact that late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon revealed he was an owner of one. In an interview with top NFT artist, Beeple, during The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Fallon revealed that he had purchased a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT through MoonPay, a crypto payments solution that he referred to as “Paypal, but for crypto.”

Given the popularity of The Tonight Show and the views Jimmy Fallon brings on a nightly basis, it is no surprise that such public exposure would result in a surge in interests in NFTs, as viewers of the show who previously did not know about NFTs would search about what this digital collectible is all about. Readers interested in NFTs could refer to previous BTCC blog posts to learn more about the fundamentals of NFTs and how they could impact the long-term prices of tokens such as Ethereum, Polkadot, and Cardano.
