Sei Dumps Cosmos for Ethereum: A High-Stakes Bet on Blockchain’s Future

Sei’s making waves—and burning bridges. The layer-1 blockchain just announced plans to sever compatibility with Cosmos and go all-in on Ethereum integration. Talk about picking sides in the great protocol war.

Why the pivot? Probably the same reason anything happens in crypto: follow the money. Ethereum’s liquidity pool is deeper than a VC’s pockets during a bull run. Meanwhile, Cosmos—despite its elegant tech—still struggles with the ’ghost chain’ stigma.

This isn’t just a technical shift—it’s a survival play. By hitching its wagon to Ethereum’s ecosystem, Sei gains access to DeFi’s heavy hitters and institutional players. Risky? Absolutely. But in a market where ’interoperability’ often means ’jack of all chains, master of none,’ doubling down on ETH might be the smartest gamble yet.

Just don’t expect Cosmos maximalists to take this lying down. The interchain community won’t forget this betrayal—especially not when the next grant cycle comes around.

New Sei users are now predominantly choosing to use the EVM instead of CosmWasm, data compiled by Sei Labs on data platform Dune Analytics shows.

What’s more, the current cross-compatibility comes at a cost, Su said. It introduces “unnecessary overhead in the codebase and complicates debugging and testing,” he said.

Still, there’s no guarantee others in the Sei community will feel the same way.

Build with Sei, a group managed by the nonprofit Sei Foundation, will host a call on May 14 to discuss the proposal in detail and give opportunities for developers and the community to ask questions and give feedback.
