In a significant move, Tether, the issuer of the popular USDT stablecoin, has announced its intention to acquire a 51% stake in Adecoagro, a South American energy and agricultural company, for a reported $1.24 billion.

Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin, has made a bid to acquire a controlling stake in South American energy and agricultural firm Adecoagro. The proposal, valued at $1.24 billion, would increase Tether’s ownership in Adecoagro to 51%. Adecoagro stated in a press release that Tether sent an unsolicited, non-binding proposal to its Board of Directors on Feb 14, 2025, offering to buy more shares at $12.41 per Common Share through a tender offer. Tether is already a significant shareholder in Adecoagro, owning 19.4% of the company’s outstanding Common Shares as of November 14, 2024. The stablecoin firm initially invested in Adecoagro in September 2024, purchasing a 9.8% stake for $100 million.
Tether Co-Founder Backs New Stablecoin Project, Pi Protocol, To Compete With Tether
Reeve Collins, co-founder of Tether, has announced his support for a new stablecoin project, Pi Protocol, which aims to compete with Tether. Collins believes that Pi Protocol represents the evolution of stablecoins, addressing some of the issues present in the current market. The project plans to put a high valuation on Treasury bonds to build up reserves and comply with regulations where Tether’s USDT has failed.
