Tether co-founder Reeve Collins is set to launch a decentralized stablecoin called USP on Ethereum and Solana blockchains in the second half of 2025. The project will use smart contracts to mint USP and offer yields to minters in the form of another token called USI. The stablecoin will be backed by yield-bearing real-world assets such as bonds and over-collateralized with assets like Treasuries and money-market funds. Collins believes Pi Protocol represents the evolution of stablecoins, aiming to compete with Tether which has dominated the market but keeps all the yield.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino has strongly opposed what he describes as competitors’ attempts to use regulatory tactics to undermine USDT, the world’s largest stablecoin. In a post, Ardoino highlighted Tether’s widespread adoption in emerging markets and accused rival stablecoin issuers of engaging in “lawfare” — the strategic use of legal and regulatory frameworks to stifle competition. He mentioned USDT as the most successful tool for US Dollar hegemony and distribution across emerging markets, with a wide physical and digital distribution network spanning from thousands of kiosks in Africa and South America to digital remittances.

TRON to Launch Gas-Free Tether (USDT) Transfers

TRON will introduce a new tool to send Tether (USDT) on its network without the need for gas fees. Currently, USDT on TRON requires a balance of TRX to transact, but this will change soon. The gas-free feature will allow users to use USDT on TRON without needing to keep a TRX balance for fees. USDT on TRON is one of the most actively used stablecoins and a significant gas burner on the chain. Justin Sun, TRON`s founder, announced that the gas feature would launch in the coming week. The technology to send USDT without additional TRX payments has been in development since 2024 and is expected to be finalized and launched by December, amidst a market liquidity crunch.
