Trump mentioned that direct envoys of Chinese leader Xi Jinping had contacted him multiple times in recent days. Trump emphasized his good relationship with Xi and expressed optimism about its continuation. The comments come after months of escalating trade tariffs between the U.S. and China, with U.S. taxes on Chinese goods reaching 145 percent and Beijing retaliating with tariffs of 125 percent.
