Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen Criticized Metaverse Plan Again
2022/04/14By:
Last year, Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee, shook the company by divulging hundreds of internal documents and accusing the social media network of not doing enough to curb the spread of misinformation. Now, hogan has challenged Facebook (now meta) again, this time in order to urge it to reshape its brand in 2021 – Metaverse.
In an interview with politico, Haugen said meta has made a “very grand commitment” to how Metaverse is designed to be safe, but if they don’t promise openness, access and other accountability measures, “I can imagine that all the problems you see on Facebook will repeat.”
Metaverse Plan
In order to make the company’s vision of Metaverse a reality, it can be said that invasive hardware such as sensors, microphones and cameras must be installed in homes and even public places to record data and copy it to the digital world.
“I’m super concerned about how many sensors are involved. When we do Metaverse, we have to put more microphones from Facebook; more other kinds of sensors in our homes,” Hogan told politico. “You really don’t have a choice now whether to let Facebook monitor you at home. We can only believe that the company will do the right thing.”
According to CNBC, meta plans to extract 47.5% from the digital asset sales of its virtual reality platform horizon worlds, which is part of the company’s Metaverse plan.
Before becoming an informer and bringing Facebook into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, hogan worked as a product manager at the social media company. Last year, she let the wall street journal access tens of thousands of Facebook internal documents, which later became known as Facebook archives. She said at the time that Facebook “put profits above the well-being of children and all users”, and the company ignored and rejected most employees’ complaints about content.
In October 2021, hogan testified before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee and told lawmakers: “I’m here today because I believe Facebook products hurt children, incite division and weaken our democracy… We must ask Facebook to make changes.”Frances Haugen criticized meta’s Metaverse plan.
