View ChartSecret (SCRT) is the native token of Secret Network, a Layer-1 blockchain built on the Cosmos SDK that specialises in privacy-preserving smart contracts. Launched in 2020, Secret Network was the first mainnet blockchain to deploy smart contracts that are private by default, allowing developers to build decentralised applications that use encrypted data. Its smart contracts, known as Secret Contracts, enable encrypted inputs, outputs, and state, meaning that while transactions remain verifiable on-chain, the underlying data stays confidential. The network positions itself as the Confidential Computing Layer of Web3 and the confidential computing hub of Web3 and AI.
SCRT is a multi-functional utility token used for staking, governance, transaction and compute fees, and interacting with secret contracts. The token has no maximum supply cap because it continuously rewards network participants through inflation to secure the chain. A community governance vote on Aug. 21, 2026 increased the token supply from approximately 362 million to over 1.44 billion SCRT. The project originated from the Enigma project conceived at MIT and has since evolved into a global, permissionless network supported by more than 30 active validators.
Secret Network originated from the Enigma project, which was initially conceived at MIT by Guy Zyskind and Oz Nathan. The first whitepaper of the Enigma project was published in 2015. In 2017, the original project was founded by two MIT graduates, Can Kisagun and Guy Zyskind, introducing a Layer-2 private-compute solution to Ethereum. Guy Zyskind, a former MIT researcher and one of the most highly-cited authors on blockchain privacy, founded SCRT Labs, the core development team behind Secret Network. Alex Zaidelson serves as CEO of SCRT Labs, based in Israel. Tor Bair, a US-based entrepreneur and MIT alumnus, is also listed as having founded Secret in 2017.
Enigma MPC, a US-based core development company with a US citizen founder, created the original Enigma protocol and remains one of the numerous development organisations contributing to the core technology of Secret Network. SCRT Labs serves as the driving force and founding core development team. The Secret Foundation Inc. and Secret Network Foundation are US-based organisations focused on the development and promotion of Secret Network.
Secret Network operates as a self-contained, base-layer blockchain created using the Cosmos software development kit (SDK). It employs a Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) delegated proof of stake consensus engine called Tendermint. The network uses Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) technology to ensure all input, output, and state are encrypted by default. This hardware-based approach is described as the fastest and most efficient form of confidential computing. Secret Contracts are privacy-preserving smart contracts that are private by default, making Secret Network the first network to launch such contracts and one of the first blockchains to use encrypted inputs, outputs, and blockchain states.
As a default, Secret Network encrypts all data. To gain access to private information, users must provide Secret Keys, which may be distributed to others to grant access. This method enhances data management capabilities. Interoperability is achieved via the Cosmos Inter Blockchain Communications (IBC) standard, plus integrations of Secret's Confidential Computing Layer, unlocking privacy-preserving smart contracts for public blockchains including Ethereum, major EVM networks, and Solana. With Secret Bridges and the SNIP-20 standard, users can bridge over and make any token privacy-preserving. The Secret AI SDK uses TEE-enabled GPU hardware integrated with the L1 blockchain, unlocking privacy-preserving decentralised AI with end-to-end encrypted LLM models and AI agents.
Secret Network's primary differentiator is its focus on programmable privacy rather than just transactional privacy. This means developers can build arbitrarily complicated data privacy protections inside an application, enabling use cases that are not possible on transparent blockchains. The network's Secret Contracts allow decentralised applications to use private data while remaining decentralised and permissionless. This positions Secret Network as the Confidential Computing Layer of Web3 and the confidential computing hub of Web3 and AI.
The launch of the Secret AI SDK represents a significant advancement, using TEE-enabled GPU hardware to enable large-scale GPU work for LLM models inside a trusted execution environment. This unlocks private chatbots, DeFAI agents, and proprietary AI business models. Additionally, SCRT Labs integrated Intel Trust Authority into every SecretVM, and partnerships with Morpheus and AITECH Cloud Network further expand the confidential AI infrastructure. The network's interoperability via Cosmos IBC and its ability to make any token privacy-preserving through Secret Bridges and the SNIP-20 standard add substantial utility and value to the ecosystem.
SCRT is multi-functional within the Secret Network. It is used for staking, allowing validators and delegators to participate in the consensus mechanism and earn rewards while ensuring network integrity. SCRT holders can participate in governance by voting on network upgrades, parameter changes, and other proposals, with governance available to all stakers. The token is also used to pay for compute and transaction fees in the Secret Network, similar to gas on Ethereum. Additionally, SCRT is used as a means to interact with secret contracts, enabling the functionality of private computations. It is used to execute secret contracts and pay all computational and transactional fees associated with applications on the network.
The Secret Network ecosystem includes several notable projects and applications. SecretSwap, launched on Feb. 17, 2021, was the network's first significant application-layer DeFi application, operating as a cross-chain Automated Market Maker (AMM) protocol prioritising privacy. Stashh develops decentralised applications on Secret Network with US-based operations. Shade is another project associated with the network. The secretSCRT privacy token implementation is backed by SCRT with a fixed 1-to-1 exchange ratio. Secret AI provides a new AI infrastructure layer enabling large-scale GPU work for LLM models inside a trusted execution environment, and SecretVM integrates Intel Trust Authority.
Key contributors and independent developers include Chain of Secrets, Enigma, Secretnodes.org, The Secret Foundation, and SCRT Labs. The network claims support from more than 30 active validators as well as several key contributors developing network tooling and core protocol functionality. Partnerships include AITECH Cloud Network for bringing Confidential AI to Agent Forge, Morpheus for unhackable zero-snoop AI infrastructure, and Intel Trust Authority integration. Named individuals associated with the ecosystem include Hang Yin, co-founder of PhalaNetwork; Joshua Allen-Nelson, founder and CTO of Mooncat_ai; and Auryn Macmillan, founder of Gnosis Guild.
SCRT cannot be mined through traditional proof-of-work mining. Instead, Secret Network uses a delegated proof of stake consensus mechanism powered by Tendermint. Participants secure the network by staking SCRT tokens with validators. Validators and delegators participate in the consensus mechanism by staking SCRT, ensuring network integrity. In return for staking, participants earn rewards generated through SCRT inflation, which is used to reward network participants and maintain security. The token has no supply cap because it constantly rewards network participants with SCRT inflation. To stake SCRT, holders delegate their tokens to validators, who are responsible for producing blocks and validating transactions. Stakers can participate in governance and earn rewards proportional to their stake.
Keeping SCRT safe requires following standard cryptocurrency security practices. Use official wallets that support SCRT and Secret Network assets. Since Secret Network encrypts all data by default and requires Secret Keys for access to private information, safeguarding these keys is critical. Never share your private keys or seed phrases with anyone. Store them in a secure, offline location. Consider using hardware wallets for large holdings. Be cautious of phishing attempts and only interact with official websites and verified applications. Since SCRT holders can participate in governance and staking, ensure you are delegating to reputable validators. Regularly update your wallet software and be aware of any network upgrades or migrations. The network's explorer update from Mintscan to zonescan.io is an example of infrastructure changes to monitor. Always verify contract addresses and official links before transacting.
