The Norwegian billionaire turned to buy Bitcoin after calling for the ban

Norwegian billionaire Øystein Stray Spetalen has invested “heavily” in both Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrency exchange MiraiEx, despite making negative statements about cryptocurrencies last week.

Mr. Spetalen recently bought an undisclosed amount of BTC as well as invested in Norwegian cryptocurrency exchange MiraiEx. A spokesperson for the exchange said:

“We don’t really need the money. But we want to grow faster. ”

Meanwhile, Spetalen’s stance on Bitcoin was in stark contrast just last week. On March 18, he said cryptocurrencies “sabotage” the environment and insisted that regulators in the EU should ban it completely.

“The only thing I come up with to analyze is that Bitcoin today consumes as much energy as all of Norway’s energy consumption. It is extremely hostile to the environment. If someone really intends on Bitcoin, then the authorities and the EU should immediately ban it. That is just nonsense. We are doing well with the existing payment systems. ”

However, he quickly changed his mind after speaking with the MiraiEx founders. By this week, the Norwegian billionaire said:

“When the truth changes, I change. I met the MiraiEx founders the day after the podcast was recorded in early March and realized I was wrong. And when I also read that Kjell Inge Røkke has invested in Bitcoin, it’s pretty obvious. Can’t bear to see Røkke make money, not me. “

Kjell Inge Røkke is another Norwegian investor who controls the local holding company Aker ASA. On March 8, the company announced that it had created Seetee, a new unit that will focus on “investing in projects and companies within the Bitcoin ecosystem,” starting with the purchase of 1,170 BTC. ($ 58.5 million at that time).

“We are very excited about the industrial opportunities that will be unlocked by Bitcoin and blockchain technology, and want to make a strong contribution to that effort.”

Now, it looks like other Norwegian investors are starting to pay attention to Bitcoin as well.
